I'm having difficulty in evaluating the CONTROLS put in place to protect consumers. All the textbook information points out the effectiveness of redress instead :(

Anyhoo, I've been hunting down some good case studies on this, BUT am confused over the irony of any case study proving the effectiveness of consumer protection.
For instance, does a case study about somebody winning compensation from a faulty manufacturer illustrate the effectiveness in statutory controls protecting consumer's rights, or does it point out the flaws in the statutes not regulating manufacturer's effectively. For our assessment, we're supposed to evaluate how well controls protect consumer's rights(as in not having them breached in the first place)

Another thing, whats the difference between a statutory and common law controls?
Statutory are statutes, and common law controls are....? I'm hopeless i know
