Why Me?

I am a specialist humanities student, who has a real passion and interest for the subjects I'll be helping you with. You'll benefit from my genuine interest in the work that you are doing, as well as my ongoing study in the humanities field {I am entering Arts (Advanced)(Honours) at Sydney Uni, majoring in sociology and history or government}. You might notice that my best result was in History Extension - arguably, also my most challenging subject. I can help you develop the higher order thinking skills and advanced analysis required to do achieve at the highest level in all your humanities subjects.

I have experience tutoring high school students, in the school tutorial service, where I specialised in essay writing - improving structure, style, depth of analysis - and - a key criteria in the marking rubric - flair. I have a number of personal traits that I think are essential in a tutor - particularly if you're struggling - I'm patient, understanding, and willing to work with you to work out the best learning style for you. I have proven skills as a teacher and motivator - in 2006 I coached the Baulkham Hills High year 7 & 8 debating, who won the State Championships.

I have also been on state champion and representative debating teams, and twice reached the NSW semi-final of the public speaking championships. My debating and speaking experience can be used to give you the edge in spoken assessment tasks - often, excellent students are let down by their results in speaking tasks, which require a very different style of preparation. I can give you the edge in individual speaking tasks, and tasks where you are required to speak or debate as part of a group.

Furthermore, this experience will be invaluable to students contemplating speeches as their Extension Two Major Work. Speeches are one of the least common kinds of major work undertaken - there are less specimens and resources out there, and many teachers are unsure of how to help their speeches students. As someone who completed a speeches major work, I can help you with composition, performance qualities and, to a certain extent, recording your work.

Finally - I really love history, and am continuing to study the subject. I'm such a geek I was disappointed that I could only do one major work in Extension History, and would be very interested in helping out an '07er with theirs. For those who still don't know what they're doing, I've got a stash of left over ideas, and can help you out with sourcing sources, developing your question, using your journal to best advantage and developing a unique and valid point of view and discussion. For those taking up this challenging subject, I can also help with the coursework - a huge range of historians for What Is History, and a particular personal interest in the JFK case study that I promise will make the work more interesting for you. My style of teaching for this subject is particularly suited to those who learn by discussion and questioning.

I'd prefer to tutor at Parramatta Library, although we can discuss other arrangments within the Parramatta / Carlingford / Epping / Blacktown Area. Rates are $25 an hour, $35 for 1 1/2 and $45 for 2 hours. If you'd like to chat, I'm on msn - lissachic_@hotmail.com, or PM me if you'd like to talk on the phone.
