What I really enjoyed during my time doing the HSC for Business Studies is finding out about information for businesses which differ from your usual Qantas and Crumpler case studies.

ITT: We'll discuss how businesses other than your conventional choices incorporate different syllabus dot points into their functioning.

Ok we'll start off with:

• Examine the impact of globalisation on operations strategies (Operations)

So practically we all know that globalisation has removed the trade barriers between countries and has given businesses many opportunities for expanding and reducing costs, and resultantly providing the potential to increase their costs.

One company which has taken advantage of globalisation is Adidas. To remain competitive, Adidas has outsourced where the source materials and outsources production to Asian companies such as Indonesia and Vietnam. In terms of reducing costs this has generally worked in their favour due to the lower legal regulations and working conditions in these countries. In addition, by sourcing globally as opposed to domestically (in Germany), the company has been able to access cheaper supplies which has further reduced their costs. Adidas has developed an efficient global web, comprised of various global suppliers, to purchase their supplies from, assessing the overall costs and quality of the inputs. This has placed Adidas in a competitive position allowing them to retain a certain standard level of quality for a minimal amount of cost.

However there are obviously issues in terms of ethics as you can see from this website:
https://www.oxfam.org.au/explore/workers-rights/are-your-clothes-made-in-sweatshops/
This has basically tarnished Adidas' image and has potentially led to reduced sales.

• Explain how businesses exhibit corporate social responsibility in the management of HR

One major example of CSR in the management of HR is ANZ Bank’s compliance with the Australian Employment Covenant, which has the plan to place 50,000 indigenous people in long-term jobs in December 2014.

Another aspect of CSR is ensuring that employees have a safe workplace that is free from harassment, accidents and discrimination. Although required by law, many businesses including Orica have placed this issue at utmost importance, ensuring that employees go through a sufficient development process and are aware of the workplace culture in order to minimise accidents.

So can any of you guys think up of any other businesses which have taken advantage of globalisation? Post your responses below.

Thanks for the thread Examine, I am sure this will be useful and is greatly appreciated.

Anyways, extending on the topic of businesses utilising the full potential of globalisation, recently Apple Inc. has outsourced their manufacturing to Foxconn in China. This has allowed them to reduce their costs (expenses) and achieve profit margins up to approximately 40%, thus improving their profitability.

I really liked using Apple Inc. (mainly for operations and marketing). Their website provides loads of information which you can directly relate to quite a lot of syllabus dot points with (such as RivalryofTroll's example)
