Ok here you have person rank 10th in a subject in normal school, say Parramatta high, and this guy doing the same subject in james ruse and comes 10th

how does UAC treat them?

ok, for school assessments, if a selective student get a same mark as a normal school school student, then the selective student gets scaling advantage.
No. The mark is irrelevant. It counts for nothing. If a selective student gets the same ranking as a normal school student, then yes, they will have an advantage in the moderation process.

also with the hsc, it is very hard to 'bomb out' since u can claim sickness or misadvanture, in which they look at your school mark more that your 'sick hsc' mark
Although I don't know from experience, I've heard that it's reasonably difficult to have a successful misadventure appeal.

The exam mark average for the class at James Ruse will (more than likely) be higher than the exam mark average for the class at Parramatta High, and as a result, the James Ruse group will be awarded higher moderated assessment marks.

Note that the school you attend and the performance of your classmates only affects your moderated assessment mark, and not your exam mark.

There is a section on the main Bored of Studies site entitled "UAI/Scaling" - it explains the moderation of assessment marks. If you have any further questions after reading that, feel free to ask.

i reckon all the selective ppl should get distributed to other schools...i mean come on! some of them dont put in alot of effort like we do but they get scaled up so high...

i reckon all of the bos ppl should get stuffed....:mad:

but from what i know the BOS's mark do not matter very much since the UAIs are done by the universities

the stupid board of studies introduced the new hsc system so that the state average goes from the 65% in the past to 75% now, so that they do not look like a bunch of failures............(stupid politicians)

that is y last year on the news there is this issue about a student receiving all marks on the 70s but the uai is in the 60s

the UAC people take the state average and change it to 50% and then work by themselves from their

how they get the UAI is still a mystery ..............that is y every1 can only estimate from your results

Out of all the marks I have, the following student did the most courses in common with yours, beebeez:

Units | Course | Exam | Assess | HSC | Band

2 Business Studies 89/100 91/100 90 6
2 Economics 91/100 89/100 90 6
2 English (Advanced) 80/100 77/100 79 4
2 Legal Studies 69/100 74/100 72 4
2 Mathematics Extension 1 91/100 93/100 92 E4
2 Mathematics Extension 2 83/100 82/100 83 3 E3

UAI 96.35
(legal studies was not counted)

how they get the UAI is still a mystery ..............that is y every1 can only estimate from your results
I'm currently in the process of typing up a document that will explain the entire process completely. It should be on the site sometime over the next few days.

THAT IS THE BEST NEWS I HAVE HEARD ALL WEEK. Because they are my approximate marks for all the subjects that I am doing, except I am getting about 80 for Adv. English.

Woah, thats bloody awesome. Is that all because of 4U Math? (97.05)

Essentially, yeah... put the marks into LazSeeker and look at the scaled marks they ended up as.

I did that, but the thing is, in LazSeeker, the scaling is a bit off. If you plug like 85 into 4U math, you end up in the top 50% of the state, which is a bit weird.

If you go furthur up, there is a guy that got 96.35. Why? He got really good marks for most things, and got better marks than the guy that got 97.05. What was the major difference between them?

You know how everyone is saying that 4 u pulls your uai high up, well I know a person from last year who reckons because she got a crapy mark for 4 u her uai actuall got pulled down.

Copied from LazSeeker:

Mathematics Ext1 4UC: 92 -> 93.200
Mathematics Ext2 4UA: 83 -> 89.278
Economics: 90 -> 83.526
Business Studies: 90 -> 78.434
English Advanced: 79 -> 69.904
Legal Studies: didn't count
Aggregate: 414.34
Estimated UAI: 96.30
Actual UAI: 96.35

Mathematics Ext1 4UC: 93 -> 94.508
Mathematics Ext2 4UA: 87 -> 92.380
Chemistry: 79 -> 79.762
Software Design & Development: 79 -> 77.749
Physics: didn't count
English Standard: 76 -> 74.419
Aggregate: 418.82
Estimated UAI: 96.80
Actual UAI: 97.05

As you can see, the first student had many of his marks scaled down to the level of the second student. You have to keep in mind that a course with 'good scaling' often means the marks were neither scaled up or down - very few courses are actually scaled up, so whether or not a course was 'scaled well' depends on how much it was scaled down by.

Chem/phys are not scaled down nearly as much as busi/eco.

Lugia - To be honest, that person doesn't sound like they know what they're talking about. In 2001, a mark of 78 would place someone in the bottom 25% of the state, and even that mark was still scaled up to ~85.

I thought it was the raw mark that you put in. OK, well that seems better. How come Adv. English gets pulled down, whereas Standard English gets pulled up

No, you put in the HSC mark. Students aren't even told their raw marks.

A mark for English (Std) was only scaled up if you scored in the top 1% of the state. A mark for English (Adv) was scaled up if you scored in the top 9% of the state.

For any particular subject, there isn't a 'set' amount of scaling that occurs across the entire spectrum of marks. There's usually a point at which your mark stays the same - above that, it gets scaled up, below that, it gets scaled down. That point corresponds to a different mark for every course.

For English (Std), the pivot mark was 77. (99th percentile)
For English (Adv), the pivot mark was 87. (91st percentile)
For Chemistry, the pivot mark was 76. (72nd percentile)
For Biology, the pivot mark was 95. (99th percentile)

You can't compare scaling across courses simply by looking at marks - try mucking around with the 'Advanced' version of LazSeeker.

I don't think I have the 'advanced' version.

What were the pivot marks for 4U and 3U math???
