I'm trying to set up an external HDD.

I would like to get 500Gb.

Samsung SATA2 500GB Harddisk 16MB $119
http://www.arc.com.au/?HDSMSATA50016_CA

Maxtor SATA 500Gb 16MB - $139
Western Digital SATA 500Gb - $129
Seagate SATA - $147
Seagate IDE - $147
http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf

I'm looking for some suggestions/opinions as I don't know whats the best option...

Also would I be right in saying that I should be able to pick up an enclosure for about $20-$30?

Thanks in advance! :)

Get a SATA drive, make sure the case supports SATA.

get a decent enclosure...preferable made of aluminium or sum other heat conducting metal...to draw heat away from the HDD....a good 1 is usually 50-75$

just make sure when making your own external drive to obtain a good quality enclosure, because i've seen some which have lead to constant delayed read/ write errors.

Btw does anyone know when we can get 2.5" 500GB drives in aus, since i hear hitachi has started making them.

No, they were just announced. They're due out in Feb in the earliest, and that's in the U.S. Don't be so impatient!

Yeah...it was $158. It is SATA right? The guy at office works was a douche and wasn't very helpful so I forgot to ask him.

If it is SATA, I'll probably pick it up during the week sometime.

I work at Officeworks (Techworks) and i didn't know what SATA/IDE were until i read this thread (and did a little bit of research). It is definately not one of the most commonly asked questions. In fact, no one has ever asked me about SATA/IDE yet.

Which store? I work at Officeworks.

The WD rep told me it was PATA.
