Faculty of Asia-Pacific? (1 Viewer)

Is it any good? Or for Japanese? I want to do something like:

Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Studies/Bachelor of Commerce (atar cutoff: 80?)
or
Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Studies/Bachelor of Economics (atar cutoff: 84?)

If for some reason I found a four leaf clover and got a 95+ in the HSC I would probably do

Bachelor of Commerce (International) @UNSW.....

Not to mention the fact that my Japanese teacher is suggesting I go to UNSW.

But that seems impossible, and so to comfort myself I just wanted to know whether the Faculty of Asia-Pacific at ANU is any good.

And what is exchange like? Isn't there a some kind of Year-In-Asia program?

I wanna go back to Japan

ANU is pretty much the best you can get in Australia for any mainstream sort of Asian studies programme (this includes Japanese) - in fact, it's quite possibly one of the best unis you can go to in the English-speaking world if you want to specialise in the Asia-Pacific region. They offer a year-in-Asia exchange programme where those doing Asian studies can live in an Asian country for a year and get it counted towards their degree.

The ANU College of Asia and the Pacific has an excellent reputation, from what I hear we are one of the best in Australia for Asia-Pacific stuff.

Plenty of exchange programs on offer - you can do the Year-in-Asia, or otherwise we have a pretty accessible Student Mobility Program for organising standard exchanges for a semester.

ANU's Japan Centre is excellent. They have a lot of teaching staff, are well funded and the classes are quite intense and difficult but also highly rewarding. Also, there are a lot of opportunities around while studying Japanese at ANU to practice your language skills.

ANU has both a Japan Club and an Asia Pacific Students Society which are really helpful, and there's a huge Japanese community based around the ANU which is helpful sometimes. There are a lot of weekly extracurricular events like Japan Club's language exchange as well as special stuff like Japan week or AnimeAu. Also, ANU is home to Za Kabuki, the longest running Kabuki performance group outside of Japan, who have a performance every year and sometimes get subsidised trips to Japan to perform (but unfortunately not this year).

As for going on exchange to Japan, you have three options:
Summer in Japan- After completing two semesters, you can spend the summer holidays at Osaka University in an intensive language course. This is a new program that hasn't actually run yet, they're getting it going this year.

Semester in Japan- at Kanazawa university, you attend classes in Japanese for a semester in either October or April

Year in Japan- For year-in, there is a list of about 20 universities you can apply to. It's a little harder to get into than the semester or summer programs as it's more academic focused. As well as attending classes, you have to write a major research essay in Japanese to submit to ANU on your return. Subsequently, on completion of you Bachelor, you'll also get a Graduate Diploma and if you do Honours on top you can receive a Masters degree. Semester begins either April or October and I'm not sure about this year's October entry but there's only about ten of us currently set to head over in April next year.

If you've already studied the language then when you start classes in Japanese at the ANU you take a placement test and then go into the class that best suits you. Also, I believe if you've studied it at high school you can get bonus ATAR points towards getting into the BAPS, but don't quote me on that, I don't know if they're still doing it. In the BAPS degree you need to do both a language major and a contextual major. This gets annoying with a double degree as you can only do two courses per degree per semester, and if you really want to do year in Asia I would recommend not doing the double as it's easier to meet requirements that way.

TL;DR ANU Asian Studies faculty is worth your HECS. Hope to see you here soon ;D
