Does anybody know if there are other ways to gain experience apart from summer vacation programs?

writing to the company and asking them for 1 or 2 weeks of unpaid work experience?? just make sure the letter is VERY well written and include reasons why they should give you a go. send the letter to as many companies as you can think of and i'm sure at least one of them will reply, they make ask you to come in for an interview first before they fully say yes.

I've just realised its pretty much just Law firms, Accounting firms and Investment Banks that offer mass vacation work programs

lol. I didn't notice that before

That's because students are cheap and usually the vacationers are pretty enthusiastic, which provides 'good value' for the firm. (This is what my partner told me as well).

Is that for grad work or vacation work at Comsec?
Also i dont want to be doing customer service stuff in phone rooms etc
