If you wanted to be really different you could wear a suit jacket, tie and no shirt.

i had pink for my yr 12 formal shirt with black suit, vest and tie. the only reason i chose it was because black was too heavy and white made me look anaemic.

I probably would have chosen blue if i had my time again because it would have matched my eyes but the pink still went nice with my skin.

I didnt have a partner so i wasnt restricted in that manner.

Just have something that looks nice and reflects you and that you wont mind looking at in photos for years to come.

Aren't you supposed to wear a dinner suit to a formal?

That's what everyone did at my formal, except a few gronks who came in business like suits. They were pretty much secretly the laughing stock of the formal.

Simple does it for me.

I like white and black, depending on which one you can pull off better and whether you have a good tie (if you're gonna wear one).

most 17-18 year old boys probably do not realise there is more than one type of suit.

Hell no!
All the guys who think they're cool but actually aren't wear black shirts, and it's not the right look.
Stick to white and light blue.
But whoever said it before, if it's black tie then black tie dress ie white shirt.

Don't wear light blue especially if you aren't going to be comfortable with the person you are going with. Sweat patches are EXTREMELY prominent in light blue shirts.

Same principle applies for work interviews.

Navy, Emerald Green, Maroon - darkish colours depending on your style are all good choices.
