If so, what are they like? (they do exist, right?)

Well, there's a generic language society called Slangsoc who have a social conversation hour once or twice a week I think behind Manning. At least they used to. And they put on a good party last semester, La Fiesta. There is a French society, check out the Beige Pages (you can a copy from Access @ Manning - it's not online at the moment as far as I can see) for more info.
