I was just wondering if the two solutions have to be the same? as in Nitrates for both solutions or can it be Nitrate in one beaker and Sulfate in the other?

It does not matter what kind of anion is used. However, it is preferable that you use nitrates to prevent precipitates forming which will affect the results of the practical.
