gen maths. the DISADVANTAGES (1 Viewer)

im considering dropping to gen maths, but i would like to know of all the disadvantages and advantages if i were to make this decision.

such as, would i be limited in uni course assumed knowledge criteria etc etc...
would one be scaled down A LOT because it's considered an "easy" subject?

it'd be much appreciated if many people would reply

A lot of higher end courses do require a new standard of 2 unit maths. But you could probably survive without it. HSCwise, you will probably save a lot of time from not studying 2 unit but will have to really perform if you want to close the gap on the subjects.

i was in your boat...i did 2unit and was gettin 75% which is pretty good..but i just knew i wouldnt put in the effort..2unit is alot of homework and revision but trust me if your good at it dont drop

i dropped down thinking id be the best ever...i came 2nd but i did horribly in my hsc so it was kinda pointless i think...
and if you are considering dropping down DO IT NOW
dont wait till next yr because i did that and youll just be catching up the whole time which is a pain in the ass...

oh and with uni preferences...if u wanna do science or like engineering you know all those kinda subjects then stick with 2unit

The decision really depends on what your interested in doing in uni. Like micky said, if you like science/engineering or commerce too keep 2u. Otherwise its probably safe to drop to general if you find 2u difficult. As long as you do good at general it wont harm your UAI

Yeah, the sooner you change courses the better. There's a big step up from the Preliminary Course to the HSC Course.

I dropped 2 unit 1/2 way thrugh year 11, and am now topping General but i can tell u i regret doing it.
I mean if u are getting a decent result and can cope with all the work stick with it.
I'v now found that the couse at Uni i want 2 do, requires Mathematics (so check that out first) and i'm bored to the bone every leason of General Maths, it really is yr 9 work if u didn't the higher course in junior high.
SO if u can stick with it

You'll find the work in Year 12 a bit more interesting and challenging. But you're right. Year 11 work is basically just a review of Year 9 and Year 10 work.

I dropped to General first term of Year 12, did well with minimal effort. Disadvantage? So easy it's boring, scaling? Well an 85 in Gen has the same scaled means as an 80 in 2U, so not that much of a disadvantage.

general is shit. everyone can do 2 unit, if you decide you really cant cope with that, then dont bother doing maths at all.

i dropped from 2U to general and yeah sure, you find it ALOT easier but the problem i have seen with some people in that is, they see that as an excuse to slack off, then in a few months time they become as bad as everyone else.
Ever since i have switched to general i have helped people understand maths, since its so much easier for me.
If you don't need 2U and your contemplating going to general, then do it. In terms of scaling, sure it isnt going to be as good as 2U but you will do better with a really good mark in general after scaling than a average of not so good mark in 2U.

Adv: Really easy to get marks, doesn't take a lot of effort
DisAdv: Can be boring and repetitive, you will have to catch up on all the prelim stuff as they can test you on that too

I dropped from 2unit to General after the year 12 half yearlies cos I was failing badly. Best decision I made as I could get 80 in G.Unit without any effort where as 2unit I'd work my ass off and get <50.

Talk to your teacher and see what they say.

I just dropped from 2unit to gen maths, I was failing advanced but I am finding gen maths really, really easy. I have much less homework to do, but, my class does not work, they are noisy and that makes it hard for me to concentrate. I also find that I spend a lot of time doing nothing in class because I finish so early.

In advanced I worked really hard simply to get 40% so for me, dropping was a good move. All I can say is, talk to your teacher and find out if it would work out for you.

Im in the exact same situation, the uni course i want only requires advanced english, but im jst worried gen maths will scale terribly. For my yearly report i got 60% wich was the exact group average, i also know im not gna be bothered to try hard in 2unitmaths cos i tried in yr11 and only got 60% and failed the yearly in yr11, so im very confused as to wat to do.

samantha are you going to general ? hahaha who are the teachers for general and unless you are going to kick james and angela's ass then i suggest you don't bother dropping to general. Maybe private one on one tutoring for mathematics cause the other tutors (colleges) tend to speed up on mathematics instead of focusing on what are you doing in class.

If you're coming first in general maths.. say the class average is 49%.. but you're getting in the 80-100's.. Will you get scaled up? Or will you get scaled down too?

I think your mark either stays the same or scales up but it doesnt scale down. Sucks if you come 2nd by a few marks
