I'm applying for selective into Yr 10, and I was wondering what school you would say is better. For your reference, both are equal distance apart 45-50m to me so travel time isn't a factor in determining which one would be better suited for me. I average around 4-5 As and the rest Bs in my reports, I frequently participate in clubs and competitions eg. AMC, AHC, BSC. AGC etc. I got into zone for swimming and cross country both this year and last year, I was U13s age champion last year for swimming, zone athletics 2022, Sydney West Swimming 2022, First in class science, history, geography, pdhpe, first in course geography (2022) and I also do the premier challenges such as reading, sporting etc.

I also do Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Squad Swimming, Piano and rugby outside of school which I've also earned awards in such as in ISKA, swim meets etc. I also do some volunteering at my church among other things

I want to apply for Girra as it seems like a better school however I feel as if the competition to get in there is much higher than the one of Penrith and I don't want to "waste" my first preference, but I've also heard and seen that Girra is steadily losing ranks each year. From 2020-2022 Penrith was usually around 10 places behind Girra however in the 2023 HSC Penrith was only 3 ranks behind. Maybe, it was just a bad year for Girra idk but I've heard on BOS that each year Girra is getting worse. On the same note, I've also heard how Penrith kids say how bad their school is and wish they went somewhere else, especially Girra. Also, it seems that Girra makes an extra class in yr 10 which allows for the enrolment of a greater number of new students than Years 8, 9 and 11.

Which schools would you say have a better environment, facilities, teachers, programs for uni, and also sport opportunities as that's a big thing for me.

My 3rd preference at the moment is Fort Street as that's the next closest school after Baulko, which I'm not going to apply for as the chance of me getting in there is much much much slimmer than all the other schools mentioned. Also. if you have any other school suggestions feel free to comment them.

Btw this doesn't relate to the actual post however my friend at Granville said that he was able to move up a year so now he's 14 in yr 10, so he'll graduate at 16. Have you ever heard of any other schools allowing students to move up a year, and is it even allowed?

Btw, Penrith also makes an extra class in year 10. I have friends who've gone to both and switched, essentially they're the same thing. I feel like Girra ranks going to go down even more cause ik the cohorts suck (no offence to them) so maybe try for Penrith? It has better facilities and teachers. For sporting opportunities I think you should view the school websites it'll give you much better information and try to contact them. Both environments are pretty similar, same toxic selective culture!! jk. Anyways Goodluck!!

dont put girra in ur choice and if u had any self respect, never go near that school. safe to say its gone to shit cos they introduced trash staff and stupid programs where they jeopardise student academics.

how far are u from the east schools? i reckon go for the schools in eastern suburbs (sydney boys and stuff) cos they cater to a lot more extracurriculars and are just all-round better than both girra and penrith. worth the extra travel time if u dont live too far.

The school is just absolute trash and should not go there unless you want to feel misery for the rest of your highschool career. Imo penrith probably a better school in terms of teachers and facilities. Take a look at girras facilities and you'll already want to re-consider.

Western sydney - Baulko (not too hard to get in if you do good on test or have extremely good reports). I know alot of people who have gotten into baulko and who arent even that smart - they were just good at the edutest which moreso tests accuracy and speed rather than your smarts. Trust me, baulko is way better of a school than girra. Alot of girras end up transferring to baulko anyways.

There is also the T1 line through western sydney to the city. Maybe consider Sydney Boys if you dont mind a bit of extra travel time.

I'd say to put 1. Baulko 2.Syd boys 3.Penrith

Maybe check out Normanhurst Boys? Don't rlly know much about the school though so someone else can comment on that.

I was planning on applying for high in yr 10 however they don't take applications for that year. Its around 1hr 20ish one way which i wouldn't mind at the moment however when planning, and study time gets more serious in yr 11-12 I don't think it'd be sustainable travelling close to 3hrs both ways

i honestly don't think I'd get into baulko as a friend of mine had 4 superiors, incredible reports, some extracurricular activities yet he still got rejected. I'm not sure if they want Einstein in there. Also, wouldn't a kid with worse reports and extracurricular activities have a higher chance of getting in than me if they put Penrith 1st? I still don't know how preferences work exactly

Most schools dont care about preferences. Its not like the y6 selective anymore. Well idk but that was not the case for my year (y11 2024 entry) cos some not so smart ppl still got into baulko

I was thinking of applying to High last year however my parents both said the travel time is way too much. Two of my friends got accepted and they said they'd be traveling for around 3hrs+ yet they still accepted the offer. Idk each to their own ig

Trust me in senior years you will NOT want to be travelling that much. Just go to penrith or smth, its not even that bad of a school
