THESE R NOT MY NOTES but i hope they help anyway

Human rights:ffice:eek:ffice" />
§ Human rights: Refers to the recognition that all people are equal, deserving of dignity, freedom, justice and peace.
§ In Australia, rights as individual human beings are honoured.
§ There are many places in the world where political oppression, religion extremism, racism and ethnic tensions put people at risk. They are tortured, raped, starved and imprisoned without trial. Genocide (deliberate extermination of a race of people) can also occur.
§ With global media exposure, we become aware of these horrors.
§ International criticism has been levelled at Australia regarding our treatment of Aborigines and also the mandatory detention on illegal immigrants.
International Aid:
§ International Aid: Assistance that governments of wealthy developed countries provide to poorer developing countries.
§ Aids can be provided by:
- Government agencies (e.g. AusAID)
- NGOs (e.g. World Vision)
- Multilateral bodies (e.g. the World Bank)
§ Types of aid include:
- Monetary aid (e.g. bilateral and multilateral aid).
- Emergency aid (e.g. medical supplies, blankets, clothing and food for communities devastated by natural disasters or wars).
- Technical aid (e.g. experts to help with agriculture, building infrastructure such as roads, communications and water supplies).
§ The Australian government provides international aid to many countries throughout the world in particular our nearest neighbours in the Asia-Pacific Region (especially Papua New Guinea).

Strategies for a better future:
Reconciliation between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians:
§ Reconciliation: Is the process of settling the differences or overcoming disagreements between people so as to create harmony.
§ It is important in Australia to improve relations with:
- Aborigines
- Torres Strait Islander People
- Wider Australian community
§ Reconciliation is a response to the increasing understanding and awareness of the injustices and inequalities suffered by these people.

What does the reconciliation movement recognise?
§ The unique position of indigenous Australians as our original inhabitants.
§ The need to overcome the continuing disadvantages they suffer as a legacy of past practices and policies.
§ The wish of the vast majority of Australians to participate in the creation of a harmonious nation.

What steps have been taken?
- In 1991, the Commonwealth parliament showed vision, leadership and unity when it voted unanimously to establish the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation. It supported initiative to make reconciliation a reality.
- Reconciliation Australia was established by the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation to provide a continuing national focus for reconciliation when the council ended its work in 2000. It aims to achieve economic and social equity for indigenous Australians by acknowledging the past and building a framework for a shared future.
§ One of the greatest public displays of support for reconciliation was when crowds of more than 100 000 walked across the Harbour Bridge in the ‘Walk for Reconciliation’ as part of Corroboree in 2000.
§ Increased efforts at reconciliation are being made at many levels within the community.

One quick pointer. If the question asks for human rights in Australia talk about our refugee and assylum seaker handling, use christmas island detention center and protest for examples plus the issue is in the news lately with K Rudd and the boat people. Got full marks in my trial with an essay based on this.
P.S Please if the question asks for Australian human rights don't write an essay on child soldiers or international womens rights. Numerous people in my year failed the geo trial because of that mistake.
