Hey y'all
what is a grade point average!?!?!?! to me its a random number that sits at the bottom of my transcript, under my accumulated points! WHAT IS IT!?!?!?!? and, what is a good number to have??

It's the average of your grades, after they've been converted to points.

The numbers depend on the uni you attend etc, but the most common system is:

7 = HD
6 = D
5 = C
4 = P
0 = F

how are the marks allocated to each of the HD, D, etc. like, is HD 90%+, D 80%+?

D = 75+
C = 65+
P = 50+

At least at usyd/unsw. I think some unis like ANU may have things a little different.

93 = HD = 7
70 = CR = 5
68 = CR = 5
64 = PS = 4
(7+5+5+4)/4 = 21/4 = 5.25 .... is dat any good?

in your case (7 x credit points +5 x credit points + 5 x credit points + 4 x credit points ) / total credit points.......i thought thats the way to work out gpa ??

Yeah, technically u should multiply the credit point value of the subject by the grade point u got, and add these, then divide by the total credit points
But assuming all ur subjects are the same CP value, then it wouldnt matter?

Softuarial, ur GPA indicates u've got a just-better-than credit average

my GPA is 6.25

I think wam is a much more fair reflection though...Otherwise the second u dont get an HD ur average is permanently less than 7 Wam also better reflects the difference between whether u get, for instance a 74 or a 65 when u get a CR, or whether u get 84 or 75 etc etc...Hehe can u tell someone who's bitter?

Yep,
ANU is:
0-45 - Fail
46-49 - PX
50-59 - P
60-69 - CR
70-79 - DI
80-100 - HD

googy, the PX would depend on how well u go in other subjects too rite? at unsw, ur average in the rest of the subjects should be over 60% ...

SoFTuaRiaL, When u say the PX would depend on how you go in other subjects; Sorry - dont understand.

My understanding is that if you get a PX at ANU and you sit a supplementary exam, and pass it is 'ok' - I am not sure what marks you get on your academic transcript.

At UC - when working out GPA the computer automatically works it out so we can check it on 'UC Online'

o well, unsw has this thing called PC (pass conceded) ... where u get 46-49 in a subject, and if ur average for other subjects besides that is over 60%, u dont have to repeat the subject. ur transcript will say PC, not PS. but if that average of other subjects is below 60, u've failed this subject ... no supplementary ...
