graphics card advice (1 Viewer)

i'm on a tighter budget than the other thread, so i thought it was probably less confusing to make a new one.

comp specs:
athlon64 3000+
768Mb RAM
KV800M mobo
plenty of HDD
- 32 Mb g/c -

so yeh i want to find a vid card which is best value and decent performance. i want to be able to play all games without hassles. i do think i got a decent system but i cant utilise it to the max without a better g/c.

i dont want to pay through my nose. but i dont want to buy any old thing. like i was getting offered 9550 256Mb for $149. i was about to go for it, but then decided to find out a little bit on my own before i jumped the gun.

in terms of how much i am willing to spend. maybe in the 200-300 range. a comparison between g/c's would be probably most clear to me.

i have no knowledge of graphics cards so please bear with me.

Right now, for $300 the 6600GT can't be beat, I find it hard to suggest much else unless you want to go for the 6800GT.

I would have to agree with him. A 6600GT would serve you very well. Unfortunately, it looks like the PCIe version (for which you can find for 250-300 dollars) tends to be cheaper than the agp version.

well the pcie one requires a pcie slot, which you dont have unfortunately (otherwise there isnt a performance difference). You could just get a vanilla 6600 (although the GT is a lot better).

for now, i suggest sticking with agp, give PCIX at least a year or 2 to mature and commercialise.

and if you go for the medium budget cards, check if they can really make use of the extra 128MB, sometimes when it comes to performance the card simply ignores the additional room, ive seen FX5200 with 256MB.

Yeah, I wouldn't go for PCI-e right now, it might go the way of RAMBUS and various other technological tangents.

You can't get a 9800XT for <$300 (you can't even get a 9800 Pro for that)

If you can get the 6600 (GT or plain), go for it, otherwise, 9600XT is decent, good value although it is a class below the 6600.

I would personally pay the little bit extra for the 6600, but everyone to their own I guess. The 9800XT, though it is getting on in age, is still an awesome card.

It's actually becoming hard to find stocks of 9800XT, and even if you do, it's only $50 less than a X800Pro.
