well, my cousin got me Lego Star Wars for my b'day ('cos she knows wat a freakin star wars fan i am) and tried running it on my comp. my system specs:

P4 2.6GHz
256Mb RAM
a lot of free space, about 20Gb
>> an integrated graphics chip with up to 64MB dynamic video memory

now upon installation (it was successful), i tried to run it, only to encounter a problem along the lines of:

'Fatal error.
Your graphics card does not support Pixel Shading/Shaders v1.1.
The game will now exit.'

now you're all probably thinking, 'Lego Star Wars, who gives a shit' but still, i'd like to know wat the problem was (she eventually took it back anyway).

thanks in adv

Your graphics card does not support Pixel Shading/Shaders v1.1.
Your problem is just that, your graphics card is not powerful enough to run that game. Many onboard graphics chips do not have features such as Pixel Shading, and obviously this game needs that to run.

You may be able to find a firmware or driver update for your motherboard (check the manufacturer's website) which solves the problem. Otherwise, you simply can't play that game with that card.

It really depends on what you need it for. A 128MB Radeon or GeForce (depending on manufacturer can be anywhere from $200 - $600) would be fine for most games. If you plan on playing things like Doom 3 at higest graphics settings then you may need to go a bit higher and get a 256MB card.

And be careful when dealing with Direct X. If you install a version of direct X that your graphics card doesn't support, it can do more damage than good. (unfortunately, I know from experience)

Yeah, installing direct x is all well and good, but if your vid card can't support it then boom.

Gigabyte GA GeForce FX5200 128MB TV DVI $72.00

That should do you to play that game, although dont expect mind blowing graphics...

Make sure that your motherboard has an AGP port before you buy a new graphics card. Motherboards with integrated vidoe might not have them.

I wouldn't recommend a FX5200 though. It's better than integrated, but it is still very crap. If you're going to upgrade you might as well get something that doesn't need to be replaced in the next 2 months or so. For Doom 3 a 6600GT is highly recommended, although at about 4 times the cost of the FX5200.

A mate of mine had the same problem, I gave him my old Ti4200 and it worked fine. I'm assuming a Ti4200 would be cheaper than an FX5200 if you want to go out and buy one.

Not to mention it's probably faster too, but stocks are very hard to find.

No. The GeForce 7800 GTX is only available as a PCI Express product, not AGP. Your best bet with AGP (it'll be a little hard finding one though) is the GeForce 6600 GT. Around $260 if you're lucky and very good performance stats.

Although waiting for the value section of the 7 series GPU could see the price of 6600GT slashed.

BTW the original question was rhetorical.

pixel shader 1.1 is directx 8

any Geforce 3 (which is the first gen of NVidia cards to be fully directx 8 compatible) or above will run it.

Directx 9's pixel shader is version 1.6, so it's not that.

yeah i have direct x 9.0c, so the obvious problem lies in my ancient hardware. thanks for the help guys, if i get around to buying a new graphics card i'll be sure to look out for one that supports later versions of pixel shaders.

I take it your onboard card is nvidia?
if so, try the range of detonator drives
40's for your 2002-2003 old card
50s for 2003-2004
and 60s for anything late 2004 and 2005

i had same problem with my ti4200 on a few games and updated drivers and works fine

no i don't think it's nVidia, in fact i don't even know what it is :S it's just some integrated graphics chip/card, 64MB, that came in-built with the computer.
