I have two graphics cards here of similar build but I am not sure which one I should use. Both are made by Abit and are based on a ATi chipset. One is an X600PRO 128MB and one is an X600XT 128MB.

Which one is the better one? I am awkwardly confused because one is an XT and one is a Pro, yet based on the same ATi chipset. I've heard from some of my clients (yes, I work at a computer store) that the XT is supposed to be better than the Pro.

BTW, I'm not using these cards for gaming or anything. This is for the computer in my room that I use to surf the web or do homework on and that's about it.

The following are the current specs of the PC:

* Intel Pentium 4 HT 530J 3.0GHz CPU
* Intel DP965LT motherboard (Intel P965 chipset)
* 2x 512MB (1GB total) G-Skill DDRII 667MHZ RAM
* 40GB IDE, IBM Deskstar hard disk
* 20X Pioneer SATA DVDRW
* 300W Delta Electronics PSU (most expensive PSU I could get) :)
* ATi Radeon X300SE 128MB
* Netcomm 54G Wireless PCI card

I know the specs sound kinda dodgy, but this PC is quite old and was built from whatever parts I could find in my bosses stock clearance pile.

Thanks.

look at the clock speeds of the video card.

clock speeds
memory clock speeds
Bus lanes (how many bits is it? 64bit?/128bit?)
pixelpipe lines?

[edit] bit of googling found this:
The X600 Pro has a core clock of 400 Mhz, and a memory frequency of 300 Mhz (600 Mhz DDR). This yields a total of 1.6 Gpixels/sec fillrate, and 9.6 GB/sec memory bandwidth (the memory bus is 128-bit).

The X600 XT, which is being reviewed, has a core clocked at 500 Mhz, and a memory frequency of 365 Mhz (730 Mhz DDR). The X600 XT therefore has a 2 Gpixel/sec fillrate, and 11.6 GB/sec memory bandwidth.

ie; XT would be ur best bet.

2nd that - XTs are usually higher clocked versions of the pros based on the same chipset, used to have a 1900XTX (better than XT xD) which was far better performing than my friend's 1900 pro.

They don't use this naming system anymore though if I'm thinking right, for the HD3000 series and above.

4870x2 FTW
dude, you're an idiot...

4870X2 wouldn't run on that PC (psu isn't good enough)
even if it did, it would be severely bottlenecked by the CPU.

Core2Duo minimum to get the best out of the newer gpu's
