The merit of a good poem lies in its timeless appeal. Is this estimation correct?

I had to do something similar for VCE literature a week or so ago,
I started off by mentioning well-known poems and poets that have stayed popular through time, and mentioned a few lines that are known and even used in day-to-day speech.
Then I mentioned Gwen Harwood as being one of these, and went into the context of when the poem was written and its reception then.
Then I went onto the context now and how her poetry is read/received.
Then I went through excerpts and related them to timeless values and things that are as relevent now as when they were written, appeals to family and social values and stuff.
So agreeing with the statement, but just justifying why I agreed.

Maybe you could pick apart your question, as in, what a 'good' poem is commonly believed to be, what it means to be 'timeless' and what exactly is 'appeal'. Iono.

...not sure if that makes sense, and this was posted a while ago ha but oh well, hopefuly it'll be of perhaps a bit of use.
