My IBM thinkpad won't start up...I turn it on, it has the IBM splash screen then it just says FAN ERROR and turns off.

Any ideas/help?

All my exam notes are on there:(

----
Edit: It now starts up when the power adapter is connected...but i think the fan is dead because I haven't heard it come on yet and just hear some clickin like the ball bearings are screwed

---

Edit edit: People, do not give me the same ideas I already have or anything simple as chances are I thought of it long ago...treat me like House...you can be my minions who I come to for a differential diagnosis.

You'll need to get it repaired.

What I suspect is happening is that the fan has indeed failed, the CPU beings to overheat and then the motherboard failsafe kicks in to save the CPU by switching it on.

Unfortuately, you're gonna have to send it back to IBM to fix. Asides from somehow passively supercooling your laptop, I can't see a way to get your notes off there without voiding warranty.
