hey guys, so i have to give a talk next week to a bunch of high school students about my course and uni and stuff. What sort of stuff would you have wanted to know about uni that an average jo bloe student could tell you? i was thinking i'd talk about how to get in, what the course is basically about, what u can do when u graduate and stuff.
any suggestions would be appreciated! thanks!

yeah, just talk about working hard to get in, but still having a life, the course, graduate positions, and just general uni life and how it differs to school.

I had to do one of those recently.

I talked about the UAI not being everything, being surprised by the amount of people who get into uni through TAFE, the change of lifestyle, the unibar, uni not being for everyone and the large dropout rates in some courses, graduate positions.... mainly focus on the facilities, the lifestyle and the changes you experience because theres plenty of content in that for a talk.

And about what to do if you dont get into a course straight away.
- Flexi entry
- transfering

alot of my friends think that the HSC is everything, and that if you dont get the exact UAI you have to give up trying to get into your desired course

The truth. The more people who are made aware of Raiks' points in particular the better, I think (Except for the unibar point, but that's just me).

Raiks - U on uniadvice or something?

I used to have to do these talks and i did discovery days this year at UoW talking to high school kiddies. All i spoke about was my situation, how i got into the course, what i thought of it, the uni life, etc. Good luck to u with your talk, i only had to talk for 5 mins.

Yeh I've had to do a few of these talks too. I have 2 next week!

Basically they are mostly interested in your experiences, so talk about how your finding your course, how hard/easy it is, what's your life like at uni, what subjects you did at school, maybe talk a bit about the uni (social life and stuff). Tell them about all the other stuff as well, but they are most interested in your experience and how it benefits you =).

tell them that uni is way harder than the HSC..
and that all those clueless high school teachers who only did a B Education degree.. who tells you that once you get into uni its all a breeze... is misleading people.. and say once u get into uni.. u gotta study twice as hard..

peace^^

No, I was the school captain for my highschool so I'm invited back to talk to the students about uni along with a few others. I wouldn' mind getting involved with Uniadvice but time constraints through work and sport don't really give the opportunity to dedicate time to something like that.

The unibar is a good point to bring up, because you're talking to all these 17yr olds who want to go out and drink... by talking about the unibar, you're providing the point that uni is an education as well as a lifestyle and can make some students realise that it just won't be anothe 3+ years of HSC again... make the uni sound appealling as well as attainable to everyone. There are lots of students who the lifestyle just as important as the education in deciding what university to go to, I know I did.

I know that the lifestyle is an important part of the university experience, yet not everyone is either willing or able to experience the unibar on a regular basis if at all... I am just not that comfortable with the fact that some people (not you, as you clearly said many) tend to imply that you cannot truly experience university without the drinking and related socialising (I hated having to sit through the talks that emphasised that point rather than noting the wide variety of interest groups that tend to exist on each campus).

Oh man, I almost fell asleep through those Life as a Uni Student thingos at discovery day.

Definately talk about facilities, why you chose your course and your uni, alternate entry type stuff, and the things you love best about uni.

Yeah, what people experience at uni is what they put in, for some it's the sport side playing uni rugby or cricket and going to the university games, while others its other societies such as debating, student politics, environmental activites, and for many it's playing snooker or trivia at the unibar with mates.... it's all about what you want.... but the idea of drinking alcohol while at university does present a big carrot for some students... although it's not an incentive for others at all... one of the best things about uni is that whatever you're interests, there's a 99% chance theirs a group or society formed where you can meet people who enjoy the same things you do.
