Hi, so I'm currently in year 12, and am currently stuck on my UAC choices. My top choice right now is the engineering and biomedical dual degree at UNSW, but I'm not sure which specialisation I should choose (currently tossing up between chemical, computer, mechanical, and software). Since the biomedical industry in Australia isn't that big yet, there is a chance that I may not get a job in the biomedical industry, so I also need to consider the demand for jobs when choosing a specialisation. For my other options, I'm not sure whether to choose a biomedical degree or something more general e.g. software, mechanical etc.

My main questions are:
  • Which unis are best for engineering? (so far I've been hearing that UNSW and UTS are good)
  • Which specialisation would be best paired with biomedical, which I would still be likely to get a job with if I can't get a biomedical job?
  • For my other choices, should I choose degrees that specifically specialise in biomedical only (e.g. biomedical degree at USYD), or choose other degrees (e.g. software, mechanical, etc.)?

If it helps, the subjects I am currently doing are Maths Ext 1, English Advanced, Business Studies, Physics, and Japanese Continuers

If you plan on going into the biomed field, then it would be logical to choose straight up biomedical engineering at USYD since you don't need to get a Masters. However, keep in mind that mechanical engineers are usually also considered for biomedical jobs, and if your thesis was in the field of biomed engineering, then it wouldn't really matter what your degree was in.

Also, be realistic. There's not a whole lot of biomed jobs in Australia (ResMed, Stryker, Cochlear, to name a few). Of my friends biomed cohort, only about 30% went into engineering. Of that 30%, I'd say only a fraction would get a role as a biomed engineer. I've got roughly a bit more than a half-dozen biomed friends and only one of them got a job in the biomed industry.
