Because society portrays beauty as associated with having lovely brown skin. It all comes back to the idea of beauty and what is acceptable in today's society. We see magazines with celebrities who have lucious tanned skin so young girls (and maybe guys?) feel the need to look like that as well.
Plus what we have been doing during the past 50 years, before sun awareness came about, beach culture + tanned skin was the way to go.

Erm I might come back and edit this and make it better later lol hope it helps
