HELPstuck on which degree to do (1 Viewer)

hi!
i'm currently a year 12 and im going over my uac application and im rlly stuck on what to choose so i was wondering if anyone who does/has done these courses could offer any deep insight n experiences or whatsoever anything is appreciated.

- Commerce + Info Sys (tbh not quite sure about the concept of info sys)
- Commerce + Science (Side note: im kinda confused about this whole science thing?? I recently found out about it but apparently you can choose to do anything? is that right? sorry!!)
- Actuarial studies (heard its rlly hard n like drop out rates r also very bad)
- Data Science (my friend told me this has like good job prospects but im not quite sure what its really about tbh)

And if it helps?? I currently do english adv, 4U, chem and eco (which i have a bad relo with)

In terms of the Bachelor of Commerce/Business, this degree allows you to explore and learn about the business world with a focus on one (or more) of its multiple areas. You normally get to pick a major, which includes any one (or in some cases two) of the following fields of study:

• Accounting
• Finance
• Economics
• Management
• Human Resource Management
• Business Analytics
• Sports Management

There are of course, more areas of business you can specialise in (the above are mere examples). Some specific majors may be unique to a particular university. For example, USyd allows you to specialise in Business Analytics as one of its majors, whereas WSU allows you to major in Hospitality Management as one of its majors. Having done HSC Economics may be a good thing with respect to the Bachelor of Commerce, particularly if you decide to specialise in Economics as your major within your Bachelor of Commerce. However, I assume this would be unlikely since you mentioned you dislike Economics. On a separate note, Business Studies would've been a good subject to take as it allows you to explore a number of business fields, which might've allowed you to gain an early insight of what a Bachelor of Commerce may potentially be like, but it's okay as you can gain this insight here anyway.

I don't do any of those courses but I can address your confusion about science in uni - it's really really broad. for instance I'm currently doing a Bachelor of Science (prereq for dental school) at usyd and the list of majors I could pick from is very diverse (but still science-related, so things like chem, bio, physics, maths, anatomy, genetics, psych, neuroscience etc.) but as for minors I could pick from the same list but ten times bigger, I can minor in things outside of science like history, a language, business, art, religion, economics etc.

so yes you can (almost) choose to do anything, it's pretty broad and your study options are vast in a science degree. I'd recommend a basic science degree like mine to anyone who has got zero idea on what they want to study, there's plenty room for experimentation and once you find something you like you could prolly do a course transfer to a degree specific to your new-found interest. limitation of this is "wasted" money and time ig

yeah I see what u mean, you don't necessarily have to match your science degree with the commerce degree though, there's no issue of "appeal". in fact I'd recommend that you pick non-commerce majors for the science degree bcs otherwise it would be like doing two commerce degrees at once, I don't see the point of that

Looks like you’re looking at UNSW based on the choice of degrees. A double degree is structured slightly differently to a single degree. Instead of doing a Major (from commerce) and a minor (at usyd, you can do this from any other faculty but unsw is a bit stricter on the rules), you do two majors: one from commerce and one from science. This is why it only takes a year extra.

In a science degree, you can choose from many majors, but you definitely have to choose a major (you can’t just do a bunch of random sci courses and cobble them together). That being said, there is a lot of wiggle room in science bc there are lots of common first year subjects and room for leeway, so you don’t need to choose your major straight away. hmm I'm not rlly sure, I'm sure there are some majors that are popular picks but idk what they are, people just choose whatever they're interested in or whatever relates to the career they have in mind

Hey I'm currently doing Actuarial Studies with Commerce at UNSW and just wanted to offer you my insight on it. Obviously, it's your decision at the end of the day but you do go over a lot of study areas (like economics, maths, coding, commerce in my case, and then obviously dependent on what double degree you choose to do with it). (Or you may not choose a double degree at all). Unfortunately, that's the only degree I can inform you about, but I'm happy to tell you more about it if you want to message me privately. Ehh I find it not so bad. Though experience will probably be different depending on what degree your doing. It just depends on how well the course faculty were able to adapt their courses to trimesters.

As someone who goes to a uni which does semesters and has friends in UNSW - it's a massive pain in the ass.

You can never do anything as your holidays don't overlap except in summer, if you're in trimesters you're in full work mode all the time, you cover less content in less time and so you learn it superficially, your holidays are kinda ass for trying to organise internships.

Perhaps it's not "that" bad, but it's still awful.

UNSW is a great uni, sure, but there are far better options with comparable teaching and without the headache of trimesters.

Also, your degree should be at the intersection of a) what your passion is b) what you are good at c) what the world needs d) what pays well.

What satisfies all these points is unique to you, but the important thing is considerable all four of these criteria.

All things considered the degrees you have listed are all in demand, so it is up to you to decide on which one you would enjoy more.
