how would i go about setting out a report style historiography with the questions:
1) Discuss how they (historians) have represented......
2) discuss possible explanations as to why they may have done this.
any suggestions on the report format/links etc will be much appreciated.
thanks - pikto

Heya-
Firstly, you need to be specific when asking questions. It would help so much if we knew what you were talking about (what is your report on). Is this part of Extension History? If so, I'll get a mod to move it...

1) You have to present the various interpretations of X - even slightly different things. You not only look at objective things like "what happened when" but also more subtle things like "is the person presented positively"
2) Why- look at what eveidence they use/don't use, how they interpret evidence, even their bias. Are the historians from the Annales School, do they prefer a more Marxist History...?

Like I said, be specific and we could help more.

i have a feeling its for PIP.

but for normal historipgraphy:
- context of historians that you will discuss
- why they have said it? (no context but qualifications)
- write objectively (balanced discussion)
- try to be as objective as possible.
- use a variety of sources.

that is all i could think of at the top of my head. :D

- why they have said it? (no context but qualifications) - REALLY?!
- write objectively (balanced discussion) - see below point
- try to be as objective as possible. - see above point
- use a variety of sources. - because i was only going to use one historian

That's probably half of what historiography is. What you said is used in a basic Ancient Essay. If historiography needs to be talked about in relationg to Minoan Crete, you need to explicitly talk about the philosophy of history. Ie, what possible schools of history the various presentations and interpretations of the events are, what value is placed on various agents/events, the emphasis of different types of evidence, etc.

You can seriuosly mention some of the stuff in one sentence. Hmm, I'm sorry that I don't know anything about Minoans, so I'll make something up.

Reider simply attributes the demise of the society to "the growing specialisation and move away from agriculture"; but it must be noted that the said historian could be called Marxist.
Hmm, that's a bit explicit... You could go the other way

Marxist historians, such as Reider, would attribute the demise of the society to "the growing specialisation and move away from agriculture" (Reider)
or something. I mean, if the word historiography is used, you need to look at both differing oppinions as well as the source of those oppinions. You should also say which people and events are found important in the demise of the culture- because you'll find that different types of historians find different events and peopls more important.

if you dont do ancient dont do historiography!
there is to much to worry about, without it!
if i could turn back the time, i wouldnt do either!
argh! uyuck!
Please, stop spamming.

Historiography, although dispised by many ancient historians, is a valid and useful field of history. I heard one Ancient Historian say "studying how history works [historiography] is like learnign how a car's engine operates before you drive".

You're just cranky because you were 2 marks off failing your ext history major work. Don't take it out on the subject.

She posts in every thread. But, it's interesting how you've come to her defence, and only recently, too, right after I destroyed her and told her to stop annoying me in PM. It's also interesting that you write like her...

1. I really wouldn't care. I haven't got a life, either.
2. No she doesn't. She should be able to handle herself. Or should I say, yourself?
4. Because she's annoying and won't stop spamming or saying stupid crap.
5. Yet you write exactly like her.

Anyway, this is pointless. We've tried to answer the question, anything else further should be about the question.
