I have since passed on my earlier Compauq laptop and am asking what stats should me computer have. Here are my needs:

- Price: around $2000 and maybe a little higher
- will be using it as a desktop replacement so want good graphics card and a decent screen size (15" should be perfect).
- will be playing games, atm havent got any of the latest, but soon prob will, so want high RAM, etc.
- prob at least 60gigs?

Is it true that for notebooks it Basically goes best to worst:

1. Centrino Pentium 4
2. Centrino celeron m
3. AMD
4. Pentium 4 M
5. Celeron

Thanks ppls,
Ac

Will you be using it purely as a desktop replacement (will you be using it outside etc.)? If you plan on using it only in your room that will determine which processor is more appropriate for you. If you simply want a desktop replacement so it doesn't take up much space and so that you can easily kart it around for holidays etc., maybe you should consider a small form pc.

I will be taking it to uni, etc sometimes, but not everyday, so I will need a laptop...

About Apple ... I have no idea ... seriously. malkin86, your suggestions does indeed seem to fit my bill but ... I dunno, for some reason I have a negative view of apples ....

Is that view substanicated by something? Like, does it have compatibilty issues with XP stuff .. because I will be on a network at home with two XP computers ...

i'm in the same situation as you.. i'm looking to get a laptop...

i'd rank them as:
1. centrino
2. p4 mobile
3. p4
4. amd
5. celeron m
6. celeron

don't know where apple would fit in there....

if you plan on taking it to uni, maybe yous hould consider a centrino because of their longer battery life...

the only disadvantage of macs is you can't play PC games on them.

you can run PC software very well through virtual pc.

10 points for everyone who can't read and seems to think that a mac is the go for someone who wants to play games!

At this stage I stand by my comments in the earlier linked thread. It's still going strong :)

Edit: That is to say, everyone who can't read, or who mistakenly thinks that the mac is a good gaming machine.

Just to declare my biases, I used a Mac when I was younger, and had to learn to use PCs whilst at high school, but I now have a G4 iBook of my own, which I rarely take out of the house.

It is a bit tricky to switch - some things are just different on a Mac than a PC. Yet, as you get more familiar with the interface, it becomes easier to use. It's a good idea to just turn it on and explore for a while - to see how it feels/get used to stuff. It's certainly easier in the beginning if you've got someone around that is fairly cluey about Macs in general.. thing is, once they get a look at your Powerbook, they might decide they're jealous! ;)

I think that Apple and Windows have become more compatible with each other over time - if you just plunk network XP OS X you can find a few good FAQs around as to how they network.

Try finding a friend with a Mac OSX of some description, and ask them if you can have a little "test-drive, cos you're thinking of maybe buying it, but it's a lot of money to spend and you've barely/never used a mac before" - most good Apple Shops will also let you do this (like the one at UNSW), but, like most shops, they get a bit narky if you decide that you're not going to buy anything afterwards. ;)
