How difficult is it to obtain a:
1. Distinction average
2. First/Second class honours (preferably first class)

In, say, a bachelor of commerce or a bachelor of economics?

Like do you basically have to live like a hermit to achieve first class honours? Haha, and forget the Uni medal, that sounds impossible (even though some people pull it off).

Secondly, roughly how many hours a week would you be working at home to achieve honours?

I think I know this part. You need to gain an average of credit. But remember, it is the lecturer who will pick you to be his/her honour student, so if your honour is popular, he/she will pick out the one/two with the highest mark. therefore, even HD average may not be good enough.

Since I don't go to university, can you clarify it for me?

I thought honours was just where you obtained a certain cumulative mark in first-year and would then do a slightly modified course of the degree with more in-depth study. I could be completely wrong, because unis don't publish much about it.

No, honours is something you do AFTER your degree. In most degrees you apply to enter their honours program if you attain a D or HD average, and you spend an extra year at uni completing it. In other degrees (such as mine) the honours year is part of the course, and honours is awarded based on marks.

lol my tutor for computers showed the class the graduation booklet for his software engineering course

60% was first class honours
35% was second class honours
and then there were 3 losers that just got their degree without anything else

wait.....percentages for 1st <-> 2nd could be the other way around....can't remember..but you get the idea

Are those average mark? Or is it 63 is the highest mark in that subject?? And what do you mean by 1st, 2nd bit. I didn't get it

I assume for a BCom degree it'll be alot less than that. How can everyone get honours? That just seems to defeat the purpose of having it.

Is the percentage of BCom students with honours (value) available somewhere?

those percentages are as in the percentage of people in the course not their marks..

1st<-> 2nd bit is
1st class honours and 2nd class honours...not sure if my numbers are right

e.g completion of certain subjects/units within certain courses/subjects

anyway, the only major to have prerequisites for honours is accounting (to my knowledge)

basically all commerce honours streams require you to have at least a 71% average for Level 2 and Level 3 courses in your chosen major (ie if you wanted to do honours in actuarial studies, you need 71% average for all 2nd and 3rd year ACTL subjects)\
there is a quota of honours students that each school takes every year however

I'm planning to do an honours year for International Business, provided I dont get a good graduate job next year, for which ill just graduate and start working

but near impossible
for me anyway

eg FINS2xxx, ACCT2xxx
what about if you just do FINS1xxx subjects in your second yr?

Techincally its Level 2 and Level 3 courses
by finance could be different - every school has different requirements - check the Finance website
