tone basically describes the mood of the text, for example, the tone of the poem the road not taken is quite regretful and sad at the beginning, and the words 'im sorry i could not travel both' show this. a tone can be happy, sad, regretful, remorseful, optimistic, pessimistic, any feeling really.

A Farewell, Age Ten

While its owner looks away I touch the rabbit.
Its long soft ears fold back under my hand.
Miles of yellow wheat bend; their leaves
rustle away and wait for the sun and wind.
This day belongs to my uncle. This is his farm.
We have stopped on our journey; when my father says to
we will go on, leaving this paradise, leaving
the family place. We have my father's job.
Like him, I will be strong all of my life.
We are men. If we squint our eyes in the sun
we will see far. I'm ready. It's good, this resolve.
But I will never pet the rabbit again.

What tone would that be?

I think in order to undetrstand tone you have to understand the objective (purpose) of the piece. What exactly does the author want the audience to think/feel/see? Then you have to tie that in with the concept of a jounrey. For example, the author's nostalgic tone is reflective of the jounrey he has undertaken through his childhood, etc

All the replies are right and really concise. When speaking about tone, remember though that you have support your statement. You need examples from the text and if you can quotes from the composer on their text and views on the theme or issue you are discussing at that point in the essay. For example, if you were doing "My Place" by Sally Morgan, and you said Nan had an aggressive/ angered tone, you would want an example such "I'm black. Do you hear, black, black, black!", and then you could justify why she was like that with a quote from the author, Sally Morgan on the abuse suffered by her people.

Good luck! Nessa...
