The same way as you would with Windows 95, 98, ME and 2000.

If your computer supports CD ROM booting put you Windows CD into your CD ROM, and restart your computer and the format/reinstallation process will start.

Still the best way to format computer with XP i reckon is with the 98SE boot floppy which has fdisk on it...

well.. not quite the same as 95,98,ME

since you needed a boot floppy

That is very odd, I have used a 98 CD to boot and format with. The format command isn't normally there. What you do is:

d:
cd win98
format c:

If you change directory to the "win98" directory you have access to the format command and fdisk (these are the only two I have checked). I assume this is also true of Win95 and ME.

Perhaps they differed in earlier/later revisions. I also have Win95 (need to check this one) and Win98 that are bootable.

if i format windows .. and reinstall.. how about product registration and stuff?

For some things like WinXP that might require activation, you will need to do it again.

thing is.

i bought a dell..

it came with xp service pack 1.

i read about product registration stuff e.t.c., then when i used my newly bought laptop product registration wasn't present. so i assumed it was some OEM thing.

im kinda scared now, coz when i format i *might encounter this product rego :|

yes, you will have to do activation again. if it doesn't work over the internet you will have to call them up.

Another thing I've heard is that once you've format an XP system, any hard disk drive partition will also disappear. Is that true?
The guy at my local computer shop told me that when my comp stuffs up.

Damn that shop owner guy.. he just wants to get money :vcross:
See i have like 30Gb free space on my partition and i was about to backup all necessary files from C:

NOTE: My initial stuff-up problem arised upon installing service pack 2. So I told the guy to install SP2 for me which he did somehow without stuffing up
