But calcium hydroxide is soluble - it is the limewater that you use in testing for CO2.

The equation is:

Word Equation: calcium metal + water ---> calcium hydroxide solution + hydrogen gas

Neutral Species Equation: Ca<sub> (s)</sub> + 2H<sub>2</sub>O<sub> (l)</sub> ---> Ca(OH)<sub>2 (aq)</sub> + H<sub>2 (g)</sub>

Net Ionic Equation: Ca<sub> (s)</sub> + 2H<sub>2</sub>O<sub> (l)</sub> ---> Ca<sup>2+</sup><sub> (aq)</sub> + 2OH<sup>-</sup><sub> (aq)</sub> + H<sub>2 (g)</sub>

Or get some Cs and you will have a more illustrated example, or try K also. About 55 moles worth should do.

You can get some solid calcium hydroxide if you have too much calcium

Stuff goggles, I will put on a closed circuit camera, and watch as the rest of the people in my class try it (of course with a sutiable amount like 2kg)

For some reason, the Department of Education frowns on this sort of activity... :)

The problem being if you have large enough chuncks is that it will spit back at you as the H2 gas builds up infront of it.
