For an assignment it says this:
"Penalties for exceeding the word limit will be applied as follows: 50 - 75 words excess – 5% of the grade awarded; 76 - 100 words excess - 10% of the grade awarded; >100 words excess - 20% of the grade awarded."

Does this mean I can go over by say 25 words? Or will I still be penalised?

I would say 50 words is the limit. How many words is the assignment overall?

No, it's fine. You're allowed an extra 10% words in law.
Not at USyd Law. One word over the limit and you're docked 10%. If you're over 101 words over, it becomes 20% etc. They check because you submit it online, in word document form. And they know all the tricks (such as the invisible white spaces etc etc).

However, at USyd Arts, there's generally 10% leeway. And you don't submit it online or anything, so people go way over.

Whoops I forgot to mention that it was in reference to UNSW Law. Yeah turnitin checks the number of words.
