Does it have any other purpose then letting schools know how they are doing and for marketing purposes (in terms of attracting prospective students)? or does it have other effects?

From the limited knowledge I know about the HSC, external rankings are done after the hsc results and atar are calculated. I guess it's purpose is how the school is doing and how they fair against other schools, and possibly make a good prediction of their atar according to their raw marks. The more important ranking is internal.

Higher the school rank the higher chance your atar would be high.. cause i heard my friend say that top 30 in nsb would get.. +99.. not sure if thats true but thats what he said..

compared with my school which is within..150 or so.. only less than 30 people would get over 90..
