I joined an environmental forum recently to try and learn more about the planet and stuff. How important is it to the average Australian?

S

PS could do with some more Aussies there so I'm not talking to myself whilst the poms and yanks are asleep :D

If by environment you mean global warming, expenditure of resources/fossil fuels, and other major worldwide things then it is quite important to me.

If by environment you mean saving the dingos or removing weeds from the local forest or some such triviality, no bloody way.

However I do care about my local area, and preserving its general appearance, etc.

I'm with MoonlightSonata. I think economic development is more important up to the point where that is threatened by destruction of the environment. So global warming is an important issue.

I'm all for global efforts to prevent human impact on complete destruction of the environment creating a hazardous biospehere for all organisms on Earth but I doubt many governments would care when they could make money by not caring.

I care insomuch as we need the environment - so our resource hogging ways have to stop. However, if there are ways to sustainably exploit the environment (emphasis on sustainably) I'm all for it.

But things like logging of old growth forests and our total reliance on fossil fuels is just stupid, both environmentally and economically.

Heh, I believe we're quite a bit beyond too late to prevent major damage, but that doesn't stop us from trying. Am a bit left of avoiding complete destruction - more like achieving a fair status quo.

To be honest, the biosphere's still far better at conducting biological experiments than we are. We were, and still are, dependant on it to obtain many a groundbreaking sci/tech.
And meanwhile, we burn, bury and waste our otherwise valuable fossil fuels products. I mean, sure the agricultural fields could be used for production of biofuel, but in this 'far-flung' future, wouldn't it be more profitable to plant, say, opium poppies, or more critical to plant, um, food? But I rant.

The planet and stuff hey. Well at least you're not generalising.

Things like global warming and that should worry every Aussie because the damn hole in the ozone layer is above us, whether it's our fault or not.

We do need to preserve the environment but we shouldn't go stupid about it. That native vegetation act is a prime example of taking things too far.

However, you asked about the average Aussie. From what I gather the "average Aussie" cares a bit about the environment but get annoyed with "greenies" who take things too far.

Recent reports indicate otherwise.

But it won't happen.

The main problem being is there is a delayed effect. You what we are seeing today in terms of global warming is of the levels of greenhouse gases years back. We can't wait until it gets to n degrees hotter, because the temp will keep rising even if greenhouse gases drop.
