How many people do reports, not essays? (1 Viewer)

Hey guys,

I was just wondering, my teacher has always taught us to do reports for extended responses instead of essays (addressing the questions under different headings). However, I've seen here that all most everyone does essays?

So I'm not sure what to do?
How many do reports, if any?

I dont do any reports for economics, ive always found that all the assesments ive had to do lend themselves to an essay style response. There is a fair amount of synthesis etc....

I only do reports in Business studies.

Essays essays essays. Actually, I've done 2 reports as assessments, but for exam extended response its essays for us... but we're always encouraged to draw diagrams and stuff in the essay, so does that make it like a report.. just without the headings?
I think having it all separated underheadings would lends itself to developing a response without the synthesis like Deus said... i think it wouldnt encourage the linkages and discussion required, so unless you're mindful to keep that in, you could cut yourself out of some of the higher marks, but it doesnt necessarily HAVE to do that, if you try to remember the linkages all the time.

In my school assessments, which have primarily been hand-in tasks, I've used a report style (headings, diagrams, tables etc.) but only because it looks good for a hand-in assignment and my teacher likes the style.
For exam responses, however, as others have said stick to an essay but use diagrams. Reports should be used for Business Studies since its an effective method of conveying business data, while Economics is a much more theoretical subject and requires synthesis as Deus said.

I'm guessing that a standard essay could get you 18-19/20, but including diagrams and graphs might push you that little bit further. If it gets you 1 more mark it's worth it.

I've always done an essay (with diagrams included). My teacher told us to NEVER do a report style format in economics.

Personally i hate reports, they look so weak and don't really discuss some questions. I ALWAYS do essays and hasn't failed me yet, averaging 18/20 for essays.
