G'day all...to the past chem students who achieved high marks in chemistry...how often do you recommend to study each night...how many days per week, etc.

I'm working out a study timetable on Tuesday once I know when I'll be doing my Wests training and I'm currently trying to figure out how often to study for each of my subjects. I'm guessing about half an hour to an hour each night for chem...but I'm not sure if this is a good figure.

Should I be doing more or less...and when I do study, what exactly should I be doing?

Thanks in advance.

I'm doing very well in chemistry now, and what I do is just keep up to date on the syllabus dotpoints. Outside exam periods, I think this would be the most EFFECTIVE way to study. i.e. it gives the most bang for buck.

Answering syllabus dotpoints is basically grabbing a copy of the syllabus and then going down the list of dotpoints and answering each one with sufficient detail and accuracy. If your answers are too long, all the better! You can resummarise your notes later. Besides, half the time it's not about having good notes, but about simply making notes, as that in itself will teach you and reinforce what you already know.

Disclaimer: I do the HSC in 2005.

It depends on a lot of things. Firstly, on how you study - if you're a consistent worker/ leave it mainly for the last minute (esp with chem and physics, thats how i did them given the heavy memorisation required...in fact I covered 4 new topics 3 days before my phys exam :) ), and on what other subjects you do. I did 4u maths and that required much more time in any case than chem or phys. Also, depends on how much chem you already know, and how long it takes for you to grasp new concepts. Chem is my favourite subject, besides which id covered most of the stuff before the course started, so I hardly spent any time on chem (and phys) during termtime, and left it for the hols. But again, it all depends on ur working style etc. Plus, I havent gotten marks back for any subject yet...
