I'd probably spend up to $250 on mine, i spent $120 on my yr10 formal dress and it wasnt that bad...
I would only spend $350 on my dress if it was absolutely PERFECT, but then again spending $350 on a formal dress to wear once is A LOT of money.
You also have to think about other stuff like shoes, hair, make-up and limo.

i definetly would max spend 300 if your getting one of those old school tacky satin numbers

personally i went for something that id wear again...
i wore this beautiful zimmermann dress in an almost fluro purple like a bright violet (new season) its short but i dressed it up with the shoes n clutch etc.
i bought that for $395
defiently the best investment.

but yer if your going traditional formal i would consider hiring...there such a waste of money

I spent $350 on a floor-length navy gown for a ball earlier this year and I've worn it since, and because it won't really go out of fashion, I'll probably wear it to more events in the future.
What counts as an old school tacky satin number? One of those strapless corset-style ones where there's a poofy skirt underneath? They tend to look awful.

Max I'd spend is $200 as I don't plan on wearing it again.

My girlfriend at the time (now long gone) said she would only go to my formal if I bought her a $500 dress.

As a result I never went.

I wouldn't have thought $350 was too much. If you're paying for it yourself, maybe. But if your parents are paying -evil cackle-
Mine was about $220, but that was onsale. Originally it was (I think) $500something.
So I'm pretty happy with it. =)

I think people should just pay whatever they're happy to spend?

I spent a ridiculous amount on mine, $500... BUT, it's absolutely perfect and I'll definitely wear it again. Many times.

I got a dress I absolutely LOVE which was advertised for $239.

I got it for $70 :D

Which is a dollar more than my year 10 dress cost.
