Hi, I’ve just started Year 12, and I'm a bit unsure about how to set up a study schedule and study effectively. In Year 11, I did okay in my prelims but didn't follow a set schedule or really know how to study properly. Now, I keep hearing that I should be doing extra study each day after school along with homework to aim for a good ATAR.

Right now, I usually just complete homework, work on assessments, and type up some notes after school. Is this enough, or is there more I should be doing regularly? And when I get closer to the HSC exams and trials, how should my study approach change?

My subjects are Maths, English Advanced, Society and Culture, Geography, and Legal Studies. Could you give me some tips on studying for each subject? Especially for Geography, since it's a new syllabus. How do I write notes for my subjects, and how often should I go over them, and how do I revise properly?

Use a method called active recall. Not like I used it, but I realised it's importance now. Everyday or every week try to recall what you have learn and not necessary rote memorisation, but try to understand concepts clearly from your notes and try answering a few questions on each topic. I don't know about Geo, Society and Culture and Legal. But for maths adv. practice is all you can do. Try to do as many questions as you can for the topic you are studying. Don't burn yourself out at the start either, but try to attempt what you did everyday. For example for advanced if you started with statistics then everyday, after you do your homework try attempting challenging questions from other sources since they give you an idea of what types of questions can be asked. For english advanced notes, create a document and for the book you are reading, add summary notes regularly and important quotes and themes which you should familiarise yourself with. This will help you in the long run for sure. And if you don't understand anything. Please do not hesitate to ask. Like of course you can put queries on BOS, but ask your teachers. They will help you for sure. Good Luck for the rest of Year 12 and hope you get help for other subjects that I couldn't cover. Also i don't do legal but you really need to familiarise with the content on a regular basis as I have known from my friends. If you do this then you will not feel under confident when tests come about

hand writing notes in your own words helps a lot since you have to actually understand the topic to put it in ur own words. for geo i handwrote my own notes but also did some case studies and then rewrote them closer to hsc w statistics since theyre kinda needed for essay writing. for geo make sure u get a copy of the syllabus so that u can kind of tick off each dot point as u go. u could still do past papers for the geo exams, the syllabus changed but the new rural and urban places part is really similar to the old urban dynamics, and the ecosystems and global diversity topic is really similar to the old ecosystems at risk topic.
