Valency...
Maybe write the ions out, remember the positive ions bond with the negative thus:
1. AlCl3 and H20
2. Al(OH)3 and Na2O
(but balance of course)


1. Al2O3 + 6HCl --> 3H2O + 2AlCl3
2. Al2O3 + 6NaOH --> 2Al(OH)3 + 3Na2O

Aluminium oxide is impervious to water, so it doesn't react
