hey USYD law students,

how is law?

how are they social aspects of the uni?

i've heard rumours that virtually noone talks to each other in their law components.

also how would you describe the ethnic and sociopolitical, and sociocultural makeup of students?

is there alot of snobs?
cheers

That's a rather personal question - I don't know anything about you so I couldn't possibly say how you would rate law.

Social events are fantastic, there could always be more, but after so many years together you really do start to bond with other students.

i've heard rumours that virtually noone talks to each other in their law components.
Where did you hear that? From personal observation, law students are generally more outspoken so they tend to talk with each other a lot more than other students from other faculties.

I think the make up is quite diverse - you'll find at uni that sociopolitical and sociocultural differences aren't barriers to making friends.

is there alot of snobs?
I don't know any snobs.

Social aspects are great- the law society holds quite a few social events and they are always lots of fun and heaps of people attend.

I haven't heard this, or seen anything like it really. Law students tend to stick together a lot- most of the people I know doing law hang out with law people a lot more than people they meet in their other degree. You tend to get to know other law students a lot- especially people in your year.

pretty shit, don't come to sydney.

yea, there is so much competition that no ones talks to each other.

I hate it, everyone makes fun of my cultural background. Everyone studies at manning bar, it's not like they play music and chill the whole day.

I wish I went to unsw so I could study in a building that wasn't surrounded by glass and I could stare at my books for hours.

I hate how sydney has so many grass area's, historic buildings, famous lecturers. Maybe I should gone to uts so I could look down and laugh them while I'm studying and there socialising.

yeah I'm in my final year. I don't have any regrets, except maybe that I took a year off after my HSC, or that I didn't study harder in my first year. I've only recently fully appreciated the number of doors that a combined commerce/law degree opens - there are plenty of career paths to choose from after graduating (e.g. finance/banking, accounting, management consulting, investment banking, law etc). Obviously career prospects will vary depending on your marks, but USYD law grads are in high demand.

Of course, most law students will agree that law is hard - so YOU will need to decide whether it's the right choice for YOU - too many students come on here expecting others to tell them what to do. If you're after more specific info, feel free to PM me or check out Law - Bored of Studies

thank you for your insightful response.

atm i'm at UWS studying law and am wondering if i should study harder and attempt to transfer.

luckily for me, when transferring you can decide whether it is 100% GPA or 50-50 GPA/ATAR

my GPA for this semester would be a high credit/low distinction.
next semester, if i really put my head down and study, i should be able to atain a high distinction, making my GPA on the distinction level?
though i should probably study really hard next semester to be competitive.

USYDs white paper is also beneficial as i'm not from sydney's north shore or eastern suburbs

there are pros and cons to the transfer of course.

pros would be USYD is sydney's most prestigious law university, has great career prospects, has great facilities, is somewhat closer to my house

cons would be:

i might not be able to get advance standing for a few of my units,

UWS has a more practical aspect, particularly in regards to mooting (whereas USYD is more theoretical?.. though i have heard rumours that USYD bought UWS's law curriculum

i will probably leave behind most of my other fellow law students at UWS.
USYD is alot more competitive (might be good i dunno),

i can do an honours without having to do an additional year (ie. with that additional year i might choose to do a masters at USYD/ANU)

there are alot of large firms starting to invest in UWS as well., so i might come off with a great job, whereas at USYD, i would really have to strive to get those top jobs

though for now, i'm not aiming for a top-tier firm, but am looking into the government, particularly in regards to a criminal prosecutor capacity within the DPP

please tell me more about the commerce/law stream.
so far (i'm in my first year) i've decided on accounting as my commerce major, although i have thought about transferring into economics, though i will have to do a few make up units.

maybe i will just do an economics degree at ANU later in life.

what do you know about the graduate entry?
because i'm doing a 5 years commerce/law degree,
at the end of the 3 years (having graduated with a commerce degree), do you know if i can claim advanced standing for my other law units and transfer into USYDs graduate entry, and finish within 5 years? (the same as if i just stayed at UWS)

also, do tell me about what you aim to do with your law/commerce degree

hey mate,

im currently doing a course at usyd, and dont see a career for me it so im thinking about changing and moving into something different. Law seems relatively interesting to me but i'm concerned about the literacy aspect that comes with studying law.

English wasn't my best subject in highschool but i aint fob. Could you tell me how tough the writing component is? how many essays? how many words? do u have to be well spoken and confident?

thanks

lsn man, no matter what university you go to, it will be as enjoyable as much as you want it to be. If your antisocial then no it's not going to be fun. If people are a snob to you then there not the kind of people you wanna be around anyway. Competition is high no matter what degree you do. Plus competition is a good thing.
