Just a quick question that's been on my mind. i know that the external HSC exams accounts for 50% of your total assessment mark, but i heard that it affects your uai significantly, as in it can push up all your class asignment marks at school if you did well or pulls it down if you did bad. Does anyone know how it works?

The HSC exams will determine your internal mark based on the placing of your rank in a subject.

You might want to have a read of this thread. It should answer the majority of your questions.

But in simple terms, how well you do in the HSC exam and how well ranked you are makes the most difference. A high HSC exam mark, combined with a poor HSC assessment mark will be averaged to give a HSC mark.

So depending on how you perceive the word 'pushing up/down of marks' to be, no there isn't any secret scaling procedure used that will purposely push a student down because he didn't do too well in the HSC exam. It's simply the average of your exam and assessment performance that makes the difference. Whether the performance in either is not great will result in a lower average.

Your marks and ranks in the HSC external exams are important because everyone in the state candidature for each course is compared over the same scale. Since everyone does the same examination it is a fairly accurate measure of your position relative to the state on a common basis.
