I'm a bit confused about exactly how the marking criteria works.

Do they set standards for each band before the HSC test is taken, or do they mould the marking guidelines according to the performance of that year group?

It seems a bit dodgy to change the criteria.

Anyone know?

Well i would say they make the Marking Guidlines when they make the HSC Exam.

This would be the logical solution. Although they could change the criteria after they have recieved the responses?

But i would say they make the Marking Guidlines when they make the exam.

they don't change the marking criteria.

they set the marking criteria before the exam.

students do the exam

they then mark the exam based on the marking criteria

they then set the relation between raw mark and aligned mark based on if they think a certain level has reached the performance band descriptors.

in rare cases they may change the marking criteria when marking to deal with unexpected cases (but either way it won't disadvantage you because you don't know the marking criteria when you do the exam.)
