that entire list shows them all doing at least ext1 maths and mostly ext2.

how hard is it to get a good uai with standard if there aren't any extension subjects ?

hang on, getting 87 english standard HSC mark is equivalent to getting 94 Chemistry HSC mark in 2001.

I get the picture now, about that beurocratic stuff. I have changed my perspective after taking a close study of the text "scaling up", and have enlightened myself. :D

gonna work real hard now..

One of the set of marks I posted didn't have any extension courses; take a look at that example. :)

The marks posted were aligned HSC marks - the average of the aligned exam mark and the moderated assessment mark.

Presumably, doing average throughout the year means you'll end up with an average moderated assessment mark... so, when that is averaged with your nice exam mark, you'll end up with an HSC mark halfway between the two.

So, make sure you do tops in your trial :)

Consider this: Last year I was ranked 11th/16 in 3unit (pretty sad). When I got my HSC mark report (from teacher, cuz i lost my net password), I discovered that I got the top exam mark of 96 in the year. However, the internal assessment mark (class mark whatsoever) was so *uckity crap, which is 76.

The result is 86, the exact halfway between the two. Lots of moral from that story..

so is it possible to obtain a uai of 90 or higher if a person is not under taking an extension course? i dropped extension at the end of yr 11, mainly bcos of the teacher, there were 21 students studying ext. math at the begining of yr 11. now theres only 6 that i know of

Yes. It is possible to attain any UAI with any combination of courses. Possible. :)

The system is designed to advantage students who choose courses which they enjoy and do well in. Your UAI will be maximised by taking courses that are suited to your abilities.

There's no point in taking extension courses unless you're capable of performing at least reasonably well in them - if you do, you'll receive little or no benefit from any positive scaling that may occur (this prevents freeloading). Similarly, there's no point in taking 'lesser' courses if you're capable of much more - most have maximum scaled marks imposed on them (this prevents dumbing down).

Because of this, a student who is very 'academically able' will tend to take extension courses and receive a high UAI. However, their UAI is the product of their original abilities; not something magically gained by doing extension courses.

Put simply, the theory goes like this: The chance of a student maximising their UAI will be diminished if they take courses that are not suited to them. The only combination of courses that will increase that chance is one that is well suited to them.

For intelligent and able students - the type who are likely to attain a high UAI - that combination may include extension courses.

Mm, well, that's the theory, anyway.

but in terms of looking at it from a schools perspective
it wouldnt be detrimental to axe all the crap scaling subjects or force their students to do english advance right? like is there an overall benefit from having uber scaling/extension subjects for the whole cohort?
