For those of you that have or did have casual work during the HSC(as in through yr12), do you think learning suffered because of it?

Im planning to get some casual work to earn some extra dough, but not sure about time management etc..
How many hours per week did you work?
Afterschool? What was your daily schedule like? Did you have trouble compromising exams/studying and work?

Thanks.

i didnt work, but about 98% of the people in my year did.
i think its all about being organised
for example, one girl would come to school, go to the gym in her free periods, have some lunch, go to work and then come home n study and still had plenty of socialisation time, and she got a UAI of about 4th in our school

in our grade some people who worked got some of the highest uais, some got middle, and some lowest

it's all about time management, if you use your time well do as much study and time on assessments as you need to, you will be fine and not disadvantaged. think of it as a break from school work and home.

whatever you do though don't work during the trial and hsc exam periods

Working during the HSC is a pretty good idea in my opinion.
But not during Trial and HSC time obviously :p
Normally when you come straight home from school and hit the books, you will waste time.
I find that if you have some motivation, you study better (eg your working 2morrow, hence no time for school work, and maybe assignment due in a couple of days)
It'll make you work harder and more effectively than if you jus had all that ample time at home to study.
lol hope that made sense...

i agree with the time managment thing...however I would say once you start working more then 10 hours pw then u have trouble juggling ur timetable and your other committments.

Anyhows, is the money very important to you during HSC year? If so, then go for it- otherwise, I'd suggest you concentrate more on your studying.

oh my god, u ppl stress too much, if u do nothing other than school, your schoolwork will suffer ,you need balance, didnt they teach u that?
you get 3 whole weeks right before the hsc to study, i dont see how working one day a week will really affect u that much!
when u have more things on your plate, you tend to arrange ur time better. How bored would u get doing nothing but school? if you do mindless work, it gives your mind a chance to relax, and you need that, and if you work with other ppl your age, it gives you a chance to bitch about school with them, always a good stress reliever!
Honestly, i reckon you should work, not too much, just like one weekend day, or thursday nights or whatever. It'll give u time off from study that is not wasted, and u get paid too, not a bad deal!

yep.. as the other said time management is the key
i work around 8-12 hours a week (thats 2 or 3 days.. one is always a weekend day) and they are 4 hour shifts.. on the days i work, usually i get home around 3pm.. work 4:30-8:30 and do school work once i get home.. if i need to
i have alot of free periods during the day and also lunchtime finishes (i posted my timetable in the school board lol) so i tend to do most of my homework, and on weeknights i wasnt (but i hope to be this yr) motivated to write notes.
i find sunday night is my best day to get my school work done.. there is like nothing to do so i do that lol
honestly.. heaps of people seem to think work interferes with the hsc..
but say u get home at 4pm every day.. go to sleep at 11pm.. thats 7 hours? do you really spend all that time every day studying anyway? and weekends? i can use work as a stress reliever too because we are all friends so its fun.. and i get paid for it :D

I worked 10 hours a week during year 12 except trials and HSC and I reall recommend it. Apart from the fact that you earn money, it is great for a balance and gives you the opportunity to forget school and socialise as well
I also went to the gym four times a week
Like others have said time management is the key although sometimes I did have to work extra late or wake up extra early but I don't regret it at all, and I got over 90!!!

it wasn't good for me, purely because i worked at the cinemas, and 1) they had a tendency to exploit younger people, ie, put them on ALL the time, and 2) the shifts would go til 10pm at the very least. working is okay if you're done by 8 or 9, but not getting home til 11 or 12 on weekdays isn't good when you have work to do and have to be up early [especially for me - my epilepsy is triggered if i don't get enough sleep at times]. if i'd stayed at baker's delight it might have been different, because most weeknights except thursdays i was done by 7. it depends on the job, the hours, and the person ultimately. i wouldn't mind working somewhere like bakers now but with the senior workload, i wouldn't go back to hoyts wanting the UAI i do.

yeah i got called up at 7.30am or so one morning "hey erin, do you want to work the 9-5.30 shift?" "but i'm already working 6-12" "so?", and i was kind of new, so i felt that i had to. then the next day i was going to work the 9-5 or whatever, around 4.30 they come and say "oh, hey, wanna work another double?" and voila, i wound up there until about 12.30. so in between i came home, slept for about 6 hours, went back to work, and came home and got up about 6 later for school. my mother was furious, and i was then forbidden from working any non saturday night midnight shift. :) i'm pretty sure that was illegal in hindsight (the double double...not my mother)

I did one shift a week and it was never the night before an exam. If it was, I cancelled it.
