I don't get the preference thing (2 Viewers)

Hey guys, i'm kinda confused bout this preference thing.

my preferences for VTac are

1 MEd at Monash
2 MEd at Melbourne
3 MEd at Tasmania

Say that I get my top preference for my interview, does that mean i can only get one interview oppotunity from Monash and Monash only because it is my top choice? Or are interviews also given out for my second and third choice?

I'm kinda confused about that because what if my interview for Monash isn't successful??

applying 4 bonded places would make it easier to get in, but still as u said.. heaps of ppl would still apply, it would still be competitive

a) It's MBBS, not MEd (MEd is Master of Education - here's hoping you didn't chose that)
b) Bonded places are still competitive, but they do give you a much greater chance of receiving a late offer.
c) Not all bonded places come with money - that's only the MRBS.

When you go for a bonded place you are forced to work in a rural hospital for 6 years. So can you still train for your specialty while at the rural hospital? IE can you apply for a fellowship (I think this is what it's called when you train to specialiase please correct me if I am wrong) at the rural hospital you are bonded too?

The gulag (/jaunt in the country) comes after you've finished your training. (i.e. you're committing Mr Antler to conscription in the year 2021)

The compulsory military (i mean rural) service is after your fellowship. So another thing to consider is that by taking up a bonded offer, you may be limited in what speciality you want to become.

Yes, i have thought about that. But the thing is, I want to do med so badly. I'm willing to do any thing (yes, even military service as you call it - 21 years) in order to pursue my dream career.

what sorta specialities do you think are required in rural areas the most? i'm okay with everything except for plastic surgery, urology, gyno, dermatology, and ophthamology.

First things first:

YOU ARE ALL WRONG. YOU HAVE JUST PUBLICISED COMMON YET UNINFORMED MYTHS.

Now, to business!

The "gulag" as you call it is NOT entirely undertaken after achieving fellowship, however you are bound to provide at least half of your term as a specialist or GP (ie after achieving fellowship). The rest (up to three years) can be "paid off" during your specialty training.

For the Bonded Medical Places Scheme, you do NOT have to work in the country - you are required to work in an area of need, be it Tamworth or Toongabbie. Furthermore, the defined "area of need" is specialty dependent - if you pick something unpopular considered to be in national workforce shortage (crisis) you can quite literally work anywhere you damn well please.

Lastly, the term does not have to be served immediately. You are required to complete it within 16 years of graduation, excluding any time exemption granted by the minister. You also do not have to complete it in a block - you can count any stint longer than three months.

umm GP? is needed ... pretty much everything is lacking in the country..

if ure on bonded and ure skillful.. do a specialty in the city... train in the city.. then do ure obligation after.. .

and each specialty has a different area of workplace shortage...
i dun think derma does but tats an ass' specialty

Haha don't ever ask a med student that question again. The closer they are to internship, the more they'll want to strangle you. EVERYONE asks us that - we even ask each other.

I'm leaning towards anaesthesia or some surgery, and the hard ones take longer.

Thanks for clearing that up Lexi, seems so much more appealing now and I will definantly be putting it down as a preference.
