What are the minimum specs I should be looking for in a computer for editing audio and video and for recording?

this is my specs atm;

E6420 @ 2.13ghz
320gb HDD
8500GT - 512mb
2gb Ram

and it does a pretty decent job for video editing.
note; this was over a year ago that i got it.

try to get a 9600GT if you can. they're pretty cheap for the performance that they pack!

everything else is pretty chaep as well.

I just want to be able to do HDV stuff in Premiere Pro and run Pro Tools, and be able to run multiple programs at once.

And whats a good sound card?

on board sound is actually fine now adays if you're not looking for 5.1surround sound or whatever.

but if you want a btter sound card; the Xi-Fi Soundcards are the best.

what's ur budget btw?

If you're serious, pro tools LE + external hardware interface.

If you want to do HDV stuff, you're going to need a decent cpu and lots of ram, and a terabyte of HDD space doesn't hurt.

its not bad, but i would want to know where the components the computer was built on. As there are expensive parts and products you get with the computer are sufficient. I would believe they are cheap imitations from Hong Kong.

If you were going to spend that sort of money i would either find the parts from a Computer Store and build the computer myself, or go to a computer store tell them what you want, and ask them to build it. GO TO MULTIPLE STORES though!

You would most prob get a much better computer.

I agree with michael1990 as well. It would be better if you went to a computer store and bought a computer there. Or better yet go online and buy a Dell, HP, Acer etc. They have good after service and are usually more reliable because the use good components.
I see so many clients come in to see me with PCs that have burnt up motherboards due to cheapo power supplies being used in those computer store built PCs.

it really depends on your budget rather than what you "should" buy
get a quad core cpu if you can
display card doesn't help much in video editing
it is mainly for gaming purpose

What's your budget? Is it heavy video editing?

CPU: Intel Quad Q6600
Motherboard: Gigabyte P35-DS3P
RAM: 4gb A-DATA DDR2-800
Graphics: Any Geforce 8800GT 512mb
HDD: Minmum 500gb SATA2 16mb cache
DVD: Any will do fine, I prefer Pioneer

Best deals are at a place called MSY. Your in Penright so the closest one is in Auburn or Ultimo in the city.

Cheapest prices.

Shit graphics card.

8600gt are terrible performers.

I'd be going with something like this

Although building yourself you could save on parts.

All depends on your budget, however, if you aren't going to play games, something like this would be good:

CPU: Core 2 Quad Q6600 (or C2DE8500)
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3
RAM: 4GB DDR-800
Graphics: 256MB ATI Radeon HD 2600XT
Hard drive: 2x1000GB Samsung (or 2x500 to cut on cost) in RAID 0
A large screen, like 24"+ (maybe 22")
Windows XP Professional

One question i have is what you have now.
A chain is as good as its weakest link. it might be easier just to update the hardware itself.
