This is from my study notes, which are pretty much straight out of the text book:
When taking a long-term view of Vietnam, the change may be the transition from a largely rural economy under French control to a fledging combination of agricultural and industrial production 100 years later. The evolutionary theory fits here as Vietnam is seen as developing along traditional lines, moving slowly from an agarian to an industrial base.

could you say something about "doi moi" - i think that was a big thing when I studied Vietnam last year (I think there's a good explanation in the Heinneman textbook :))

I wish I did something interesting like Vietnam. I did Japan and am using the functionalist theory. Easy-peasy.
