Don't really see a problem with religion as long as it is not forced upon others, and is thus kept as a personal belief.

I'd contend that religion was a necessary precursor to the rational thought which completely supersedes it.

It was also arguably important in the establishment and enforcement of a universal system of ethics, which is essentially a prerequisite for any society larger than a familial group.

Even today it offers some interesting metaphysical and spiritual discourse, but should certainly take a backseat to science and liberal democracy. It further acts as a spur for progress in science.

Anyway, religion isn't the cause of the worlds problems: you need only look at China or Israel/Palestine to see that people are quite capable of abject stupidity and cruelty without recourse to religion. What is at fault are excessive conservatism, tradition, fundamentalism, and/or blind faith, whether in ideology, patriotism, or religion.

Yes it would be a much better place.

as the Israeli - Palestinian conflict will ease up ( note: religion isn't the only reasons why arabs are angry about this, but then again it woulden't have happened because the jews would have no "promised land")

There will be no such thing as extremist Muslims

People won't make a big deal about WYD.

and many many more reasons

to the guy above,
the problem religion makes is that there is no universal system ethics.

Religion isn't the problem, it's an excuse for causing problems. People will always be intolerate of something regardless of what it is. There is no utopia that will cater to everyone's desires and needs.

Religion is the easy way out for quite a few people, generally those who rather have someone else think up the answers for them.

yea put well. it's an excuse for causing problems. But if it wasen't around it won't be an excuse. But then politicians would figure something out.

If there was no religion, microsoft would be an excuse for causing problems. :)

i think this is right but you have to make room that there will always be ideas that are a problem like what is happening in the arab countries, india and indonesia

Not sure I buy the whole "religion is an excuse, not a cause" argument. Is praying in the name of a religion an excuse for something? Giving to the poor?

Sure, religion may be used as an excuse to do some messed up things that people would do anyway, but I think by and far, religion is the root cause in a lot of cases. Sure, if religion did not exist, people might find another excuse to do something in some cases, but if AIDS did not exist, people might die from something else too, or the food problems in some countries might get worse - it doesn't mean the world wouldn't be a better place without AIDS. I think the same can be said of religion.

I don't think it was necessary as such but it's clearly a product of the same pattern seeking behaviour that would later lead to rational thought, they just had nothing to work with at the time so it was their (our) first attempt.

The only reason religion exists is because there aren't any scientific proof for some things in the world; if there were more Darwins around then I don't think there would be any religion left standing except Science.

But then again, that's also questionable, since many scientists themselves are ironically religious, and openly admit that even though there is mounting evidence against various religions, it still holds valid. Proves that religion is part of the human psyche i guess, can't live with it, can't live without it =O

I'd think that without religion, there would be less wars and racism. If you think about it, most of the racism and division in communities are ironically caused by aggressive "acolytes" whereas religion is meant to TEACH the exact opposite; love your neighbour, empty your wallet and you'll take the VIP route to heaven.

I'm not a fan of religion at all and I think that removing religion would dissolve so many problems new ones would arise in relation to race and sex among other things
