Is it okay to switch to 3rd person like so

Technically, no. But more than enough students do it, so you probably wouldn't be penalised. It does of course, depending on the wording of the question.

Your method is probably safer than something like:

He felt expelled and exiled

Which changes the sentence.

You must use the stimuli as is and learn to adapt your story around it. You should be trying to accustom yourself to a number of different styles so you can handle both a stimuli given in 1st or 3rd person.
