I can't go for that
'assess the impact that the spread of conflict in vietnam had on Cambodia in the period up to 1979'
in trying to answer this question in preparation for the in class essay we have, i have written the following introduction and conclusion and sorted out what i at least should talk about. if anyone can offer any comments, criticisms and or suggestions that would be great.
Introduction
The conflict occurring in Indochina in the period leading up to 1979 is indeed one which had a significant impact on many countries. As 20th Century Scholar Robert Schulzlinger stated "The War in Vietnam helped shape the contours of world politics." There is no doubt that Cambodia was one such country. Lying in the Indochina region between Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, the Vietnam war had a profound economic, social and political effect on the country, as seen, for example in the 'secret bombing' instigated by Nixon in 1969 which eventually led to the replacement of the neutral King Norodom Sihanouk by Lon Nol, and later the totalitarian Pol Pot, who's tyrannical rule resulted in the death of 3 million civilians.
topics to talk about:
- inevitability of conflict due to location of cambodia
- king sihanouk's neutrality
- nixon's involvement (general USA invovemnet, bombing, troops etc)
- Sihanouk's replacement (institution of Lon Nol)
- Growth of Khmer Rouge + Communism
- Pol Pot's rise to power
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the conflict occurrring in Indochina in the period between 1979 had a profound impact on Cambodia. Indeed it was inevitable that Cambodia eventually became involved in the war due to its close proximity to Vietnam, and that such events would have a significant impact on the country, however other contributing factors such as the neutrality of Norodom Sihanouk led to the tyrannical situation that was Pol Pot's regime.
