so how did he actually generate electricity? was it by connecting two wires of different metals to the muscle of a frog? if so, how the hell did he notice the generation of electricity? by twitching of muscles?

did he call this animal electricity? what was his theory in regards to result?

Yes he noticed all the twitching and stuff and concluded that the electricity came from the animal. He called it animal electricity. His work has led to a whole branch of chemistry called electrophysiology or something. I haven't seen many questions where we have to go into anymore detail than that. Most of the time they ask about how Volta and subsequent scientists challenged these ideas.

Galvani set up an experiment involving 2 dissimilar metals (electrodes) connected to an muscle of a frog's leg. He incorrectly concluded it was 'animal electricity'. Despite this wrong conclusion, his experiments raised the idea that by connecting 2 dissimilar metals, an electrical current could be produced and maintained.

Volta disagreed, and proved that it was the electrodes/wires in the experiment that generated the electric current, NOT the frog's 'animal electricity'. With this in mind, he built the Voltaic Pile, which was the first electrical-producing device.

So Galvanic raised the initial idea - thus the Galvanic Cell.
