Yeah, thought indie music could go into a single thread, just to help each other discover new bands and music easier :)

If theres already a thread for indie music, just delete this then (although i couldnt find one).

Also, let there be no arguing over what the term "indie" means. Lets just all accept that, yes, the term indie was first coined from independant, meaning to be on an independant label; however, as time has passed and language has evolved, "indie" can be labelled as a genre (ala MySpace having indie labelled as a genre as well as a label signification) aswell.

Some bands/artists and albums that i recommend:
The Format - Dog Problems (i would consider this album within top 5 of indie albums to date. simply fantastic)
Regina Spektor - Begin To Hope
As Tall As Lions - Self Titled (been playing in my ipod for months now. <3333 dan nigro's voice)
Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism (yes, i know they are signed with Atlantic, a major label)
The Arcade Fire - Neon Bible as well as their White Session album.
Explosions in the Sky - All of a Sudden, I Miss Everyone (best album to come out in '07 so far, in my opinion)
Sufjan Stevens <-- self explantory. brilliant artist. brilliant.
The Decemberists
Of Montreal
Imogen Heap and Frou Frou (although i prefer Frou Frou <3)
Neutral Milk Hotel
Iron & Wine - In the Reins
Asobi Seksu - Citrus (fun indie music =])
Broken Social Scene - Bee Hives
Sigur Ros (everyone knows this post-rock band by now, but still worth the mention. love their hypnotic sounds)
Say Anything - their lyrics are fucken fantastic haha
Arctic Monkeys. although a little overrated, still good music.
Bloc Party <-- check Silent Alarm out before you head onto A Weekend in the City.
Bright Eyes
Damien Rice
We Are Scientists (i think theyre on a major label. still good indie music though)

anyway, yeah theres more than a few great artists and bands there.

what are some bands you recommend/ listen to?
always up for new music =D

Iron and Wine - our endless numbered days is one of my favorite albums... of all time. I dunno if i've heard in the reins, though.

out of those bands, i enjoy explosions in the sky and neutral milk hotel. the rest i might like the odd song from but generally don't care for.

sebadoh's "gimme indie rock" gives a witty lesson on how 'indie' came to define itself as a sound as well as a label type...

Started back in '83
Started seeing things a differently
And hardcore wasn't doin' it for me no more
Started smoking pot
Thought things sounded better slow
Much slower, heavier
Black magic melody to sink this poseur's soul

VU Stooges undeniably cool
Took a lesson from that drone rock school
Manipulate musicians hack righteous drool
Getting loose with the Pussy Galore
Cracking jokes like a Thurston Moore
Peddle hopping like a Dinosaur, J...

Rock and Roll genius, ride the middle of the road
Milk that sound, blow your load
Shoot it further than you ever said it go
Four stars in the Rolling Stone

Oooh sludge rock,
That's hard as harsh
Just gimme indie rock!
It's gone big
Come on indie rock
Just give me indie rock

Taking inspiration from Husker Du
It's a new generation
Of electric white boy blues
Come on indie rock
It's gone big
Come on indie rock
Just give me indie rock

Breaking down the barriers
Like Sonic Youth
They got what they wanted
Maybe i can get what i want too
Come on indie rock
It's gone big
Come on indie rock
Just give me indie rock

Time to knock
The hard rock on it's side
Time to knock
The shit right up a storm
Turn to amaze
With the indie sludge
Grunge!
Aaah!
